Title: 81-91 K5 Blazer floor/carpet interior question
Post by: 7387chevynut on June 06, 2012, 01:45:35 AM
This question is for those of us who have owned one with factory carpet & full interior still in it for the 81-91 model years.

I recently bought new carpet for my 90 k5, and after installing it have a long plastic pannel that butts up against the base of the rear cargo area (just below the rear bench seat)..........this has what I would call  (tits) on the backside of it that stick out about an inch or more (theres 4 of them I think) and the front of the pannel has screw holes that go right through these.......to screw into the base wall of the cargo floor.

My question is how is this piece supposed to lie flat against the carpet?  my rear floor area doesnt appear to have holes drilled for this to go through.

hopefully somebody knows what the hell I'm talking about.......lol

This part right. There should be factory holes already there. All 3 k5's I rebuilt (85,87,91) all unscrewed and re screwed right back in.

YUP.......thats the one.........I dont know what the hell you call it.

So do the (tits) on the backside go through the metal too? or do they butt up against the wall of the floor??

i dont see how it can really lie flat with those poking out the backside up against the floor?

That picture you show..........are those yours?   for sale? What exactly is that piece called?

Its called a rear seat carpet trim piece. It just buts up to the carpet and screws in. The tabs keep the panel flush with the carpet after its fully screwed in. Try to be very careful when screwing those down, because those tabs will crack super easy.  I had to cut them way down when I did the carpet on my 86, because I went with a RV style carpet, and that was a very thin carpet, So those tabs made the panel stick out Way to far.

I'm wondering if I shouldnt just cut the tabs off..............I really dont see the point of having them.  Because the carpet cant lay entirely flush up against the wall with those long tabs sticking out.

yeah just cut them off. I just turned my bench grinder on and slowly grinded them down till they were all flush.

The stock carpet on a K5 consists of the actual colored carpet, a thin rubber mat like layer, and thick (probably 1/2"-3/4" sound deadening pad...If you take all that out and just install a thin layer of carpet the spacing wont be right and cause it to stick out.  You could take a peice of scrap carpet thats a little thicker and cut it to length, then place that underneath of your new carpet and plastic peice.
