Title: Header/exhaust questions, laws and Q's
Post by: Jthomas on July 27, 2012, 12:47:13 AM
So I just swung by the exhaust shops today to get a bid for my exhaust work (not even close to this poin on the truck)

But I got a couple questions first:

I have a big set of camaro/chevelle/el camino headers. 2 1/4" pipes to a 3 1/2 collector. Will this fit into a 88k5 chassis? (big block)

Should I run 3.5" or 4" exhaust, pros-cons.   This will no longer be my dd, but it will see roads on weekends and such.  Mufflers will be glass packs. According to Chevrolet, I should be using 4". But what do you guys think?

Okay, now back to the exhaust guy, I planned on buying my own exhaust tubing, and have him weld, bend, and then I could mount it. He asked what I had, I told home the year make model. He asked manifolds? No headers.

Then he stated, well we can't do it then. I asked why? He said it's michigans smog laws. That he would have to put cats on it an all this other smog p00. Then I asked him, so you won't do it? He said it's illegal. Then I asked him again if he would do it loll.     Then he said he could If it was offroad use only. I said, yea u could say that. He still hasn't given me a for sure answer, all the exhaust shops said the same thing to me. Wtf? What an I do?

No, I didn't ask about the headers. That's why I'm asking if they will fit. And I was asking what u thought of the pipe size. 4" will be really loud, and what not. And it does see roads?

Only one way to find out if they will fit,, hold em up in there, and I would sure think 3 inch would be enuff, but I'm not sure with the blower

And don't get flashbacks if your concerned with noise.  Get some nice welded mufflers like flowmeter

I can't hold em in there, no engine. That's why I want to know ahead of time befor I drop it in.

Would their any power difference between 3" and 4"?

i think the headers would fit but may hit a few small spots and the front drive shaft or at least sbc camaro ones do lol

i don't think the headers will fit either, cars are built shorter and so are the headers most of the time so i don't think the headers will drop far enough to get under everything in the truck....

ok now it looks like everybody is taking a stab in the dark to help, so lets backup here.
1) is motor built and ready to put into the truck (i,e are the motor mounts installed)?
2) how big of a body lift did you use?
3) whre does the motor sit in the engine bay (refer to question 1)?

because you can answer alot of your questions after you put  the motor in. so try that first.

Engine is not ready to install. Just need to know if they will fit so I have time to find some if not.

3" body lift. I'll be using solid engine mounts in the same factory mounting location.

do you have a junk block that you can use just for mock up that you can set in there to then bolt up the headers to.

Then might want to get a tape measure out and crunch some numbers. Every truck build is different . . .

I tried, it's pretty much impossible without a block in there to get close.
Half inch off here, inch off there, it all ads up and makes it impossible to tell without something being there.

Well, put the engine in when it's time and order 'em then.

Need a horse before you can pull the carriage home.
