Title: 86 F-150
Post by: Air Force Fireman on October 02, 2012, 03:16:15 AM
I have an 86 F-150 that I'm slowly turning into a 3/4 ton. Put rear 3/4 leaves under it already. I put a 5 speed into it. The rear end is going to need to be rebuilt in the near future. Right now it has 3.08 gears. I know I don't want those back in there. I'm thinkin either 3.55 or 3.73. What do you guys think? And I know I'll have to change the front as well. It has IFS right now and I want to go to solid anyway. I do alot of every day driving with it. I drive back and forth between MI and Missouri as well. But I have horses so I haul trailers and put large round bales in the bed and all that. Just wonderin what y'alls opinion on gearing is. Thanks! a=f

I've got 33s on it. My Jeep had 4.10  Good gears, I like them. What did that axle run you?  a=f

Your front axle is actually TTB  Twin Traction Beam...............its not a bad set up..............and really shouldnt be called IFS.

All 80-96 F250's had that.

You could swap in a mid 70's Heavy Duty Dana 44 fron a F250 High boy...........just make sure it has open knuckle front....................and not closed knuckle drum brake.

Thank you. That helps. I didn't know there was a difference between IFS and teh TTB. I'll check it out.  a=f

Wouldn't mind upgrading to 8 lug. Like I said, tryin to build it into a F-250 over time, so heavier axles would make sense.  a=f
