The motor in my truck has seen better days.... She has a pretty good knock and I want to rebuild but I got some questions.
Its a 5.9l fuel injected in a 1996 Dodge 1500. I want to build it up but i dont wan to go too extreme. Maybe somewhere around 350 hp.
1. Should I go to a carburated set up or should i stay with the fuel injection?
2. Can anyone give me a idea of how much Im gonna spend and who to talk to about doing it?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Personally I like carbs, but the only injection I'd use is mechanical. The byTch about carbs is that at extreme inclines your truck will barley run. And MFI is like race only, you won't be able to drive it on the street what so ever and you will have shitt MPGs. You could always keep it EFI, but I'm really not a computer person. I don't like having to change chips and sensors. loll
As far as adding horse power. Take a gander through summit, pretty lower prices on budget proformance parts. Upgrade to a roller rocker, even the stamped ones are fine. Move to a little more cam, maybe a roller cam? Intake? Once you change your cam it's a good idea to change your fuel set up. *all depending*
Idk if you want to change a lot of hardwear or just looking to make a few HP here and there.
But changing your positions to higher comp is a good way, but that requires complete engine dissisembly and new rings, might as well change all the bearings while in there.
Look into possibly cold air intake? Or even just removing the AC. Headers
I can do the complete rebuild and put in anything you like, but I won't be free for a long time to even touch it. I can even hone the cylinders little enough were u can use the same pistons. Just putting a scratch pattern.
But if you want to do a whole rebuild, you can find sweet rotating assemblies. They have everything you need. Ring,bearings,seals/gaskets. You just have to go shopping a bit. The only thing about a build that I don't like Is all the nickel and dimes.
Really there are so many directions you can go, it's just up to you really. I'm just sitting here putting ideas in your head.
One thing that I do recommend, since it is knocking, at the least you prolly don't have any bearings left, if you get the motor down to a block, remove the cam bearings and press new ones back in. It's only a few dollars more, but just because there's prolly metal in the oil, and if you put a new cam in it, it's a good thing to have. Instead of worn bearings on a new cam.
You can always look into new ignition systems and possibly retarding your timing a degree or so from your total advance.
I'll sum it up.
Cheapest way: get new stock rotting assem, stamped roller rockers, stock ignition, headers, stock fuel, a mild cam and lifte set. If you go roller everything, it's not just going to add HP, but also add a longer life.
More expensive way (larger HP): make a custom rotating assem. And get everything forged. High comp positions. Lot more cam, solid roller or hydro rollers. A nice set of roller rockers. (Not stamped) maybe some head work, new HO oil pump, new fuel system, new ignition. And if you have an auto tranny you will prolly have to change your torque converter.
Oh and I forgot, cold air intake. For the budget.
Idk were your located but if you need engine machining here's a great guy.

Wel im not 100% sure yet but I think im gonna rebuild and keep it fuel injected.
I do want to get a bigger cam and upgrade everything to forged. Where can I find what cam can be used with a pretty much stock motor and stock fuel injection?
Have to worry about the PCM might have to get that reprogramed

Yeah i did a little research, as long as i dont go too big i will be ok.
Check out some of the dodge ram sites out there. You'll find a lot of guys that have done the same thing to the same motor, I had an 01 ram with the 5.9 put all larger cam in it, headers, got it reprogrammed and went a pound or 2 larger on the injectors with a nice exhaust and cold air intake and it was a good running truck round 300 hp. The only engine guy I use and some other family members have used is Rob at muellers auto in auburn ( near bay city) real cool guy and will go over a lot of options with ya and answer any questions you got
When I built mine I.started by calling a shop that tunes computer they normally will.walk you thru what to do to get where you want to be and still keep your truck.running good
