Title: sbc cam question
Post by: 85cHeavyMetalBogger on February 26, 2013, 11:33:24 PM
Hey ya'll, I have a 355 sbc stock heads and internals.  What size cam can i go with that will give me the most power, or any other suggestions that i can do. plan on also getting a new intake to replace the stock one. this is a mud truck motor.  GotMud? ++peace

well if ya don't wanna change the springs or anything you can run up to a 500 lift cam safely. anything past that is pushing it. then just decide on the rpm range ya want it to work best in and pick one. some carbs like a certain duration to work the best so keep that in mind.

Just call any cam company. They know what's best.  They give it to ya straight, and will tell you the best springs for your set up.

If I recall right I think you can go .555 with stock springs befor they bind?

everything is stock(to my knowledge) on motor except it has an rv cam, no nothing about, and flat top pistons 4 valve releif.  dont really know a whole lot about the motor. thinks its a 600 or 650 4 barrell carb.  400 trans shift kit, 208 case, one tones with 410's spinning 35 boggers.

call a cam company and ask them its what they do lol and .555 lift is way to big for stock .480 mabye a little more is all you can get and thats  not much bigger than a rv cam if you are looking for more power you may want to upgrade more than the cam. heads are very important to making power if I was you Id find a good set of heads frist

Stock heads you can only go 488 lift or it will pull the rocker studs out. Call crowder cams and they will hook you up with a great cam. If you just put a big cam in it will not flow right with low compression. So for best performance would be like a 450 lift and 108 lope separation , well about that lol. Just call crowder cams, I think talk to a guy name Jerry

Yea I wasn't 100% sure about the cam lift. But I'm pretty sure it was here where I seen somone say they were running .555 stock. But that could have been vortec? Not sure if there is a difference?
Or the guy was full of p00

Even a Vortec head has to be modified to run over .480" lift.  Like the ofher guys are saying, You might be able to physiclly run a bigger cam but that doesn't mean it's gonna work good with stock heads.  With your heads stick to the .470"-.480" lift range.  Look at the Comp extreme energy or Voodoo cams.  They make great  power even with stock heads. When your ready to upgrade to better heads then go for a larger cam.  Do yourself a favor and make a phone call.   Call Summit, Jegs or somebody.

i did not see where he said any thing about stall conv. so going over 480 lift will be hard to get it idle good in gear.
