That is TRUE............it sounds stupid.........but that's Michigan law. In 16 years, I have never yet understood this law myself, but it is what it is.

Being 18 you can BUY from a private individual who has a pistol for sale.  Now gun shows might be tricky, the seller of the gun would have to be A NON FFL dealer (private seller).

Outside of that, you have to be 21 to buy from a licensed FFL gun dealer.....like ACE Hardware, Gander Mountain.....ect....

As with any pistol purchase you'll need a purchase permit.

I am 19 now but i bought a pistol when i was 18 i open carry it as well. You can purchase a pistol through private sales but not a ffl dealer, such as dicks, cabelas, ect. You must be 21 to purchase through a store and to conceal carry. In order to purchase a pistol from an individual is to first, apply for a pistol purchase permit at your local P.D. or any county sherriff dpt in the state of michigan. Once you've obtained your permit you then go and purchase the permit from said individual. You fill in the blanks on the permit on all 3 copies. One copy is for you, the other for the seller and the other for your local P.D. the police department in your township. Even if you got it some where else. Then they send that copy to the state police and register your newly purchased handgun in your name. You must keep your copy of the permit for 30 days minimum after the date in which you turned it in. The permit when you get it is good for 30days but is only good for 10 days after the permit is filled out. I hope this helped you!

it is, at 18 you can't buy a .22 cal handgun from a store, but you can buy any caliber rifle, including a .50 BMG if you got the cash.
