Title: chevy bbc timing
Post by: Bryank on September 18, 2013, 07:32:12 PM
where do you guys point your rotor at when at tdc? I use to point mine right at the 1 spark plug but my buddy told me your supposed to point it directly towards the back of the carb. I know you can put it where ever you want and still make it run good. But where is the best spot to put it?

After finding tdc, I usually go a little farther to 15 degrees on the balancer. This points the rotor a little past #1, almost aimed at the carb.

How do you figure it would be way off.....it does not matter what direction the rotor is pointing when you drop the dizzy in....all that matters is that #1 position is at tdc on compression stroke, then drop the dizzy in, and where ever the rotor points that's where the #1 plug wire on the cap needs to be, and rest of wires follow firing order....same as   a SBC, most people do point the rotor at #1 just to know where its at, hell I've put em in pointing all different directions and never a problem, but I do prefer to point it to #1 cylinder

1&6 are both on tdc at the same time.

i know it will run anywhere but it seems like it's gonna work the best the closer you are to 1.

It don't matter where its pointed...it does not effect how it runs at all.....as long as your firing order is correct, and the rotor points to what ever terminal on the cap, that's the one you make #1 plug wire go too and start firing order from there.....

Even tho #1 & #6 are tdc at same time, you should never time off #6, always time with #1

Weve got our pulling truck set at 35 degrees past tdc

I always time off #1. any distributor I've ever put in, I pointed the rotor to before #6, line up the oil pump shaft, then let itrrotate it down on the gear till it points at #6. All my motors have ran great that way.
