I m gonna start working on my scout and previous owner did soa and then cut the axle tubing on one side to turn whole hub assembly like 15 degree and weld it but he did only one side so i need to do on other side what kind of welding stick do i use that will work good on the axle tubing? I m born n raised w mig weld barely have any experience on arc weld and i just bought one. What type of steel is axle tubing? Will mig do the job?
I usually use the mig on em depending on how much of a gap I cut into it loll..... the stick tends to fill bigger gaps better IMO.... but as for the stick, I use 6013 on em, I've never had a problem with it
6011 is a rod they use on oil pipelines, it burns hot, and it's an incredible penetrant. You can weld directly into grease and oil and have a 100% weld. I use it for my root weld if there's a gap. Then I use 7018 on the rest of the passes. Depending on the gap, I'll use 6011 as a heat source and the 7018 filler.
7018 is pretty good mild steel rod, works great on lots. I use tube strong for anything that will be pulled/pushed on. It's a high tensile strength rod.
If your familiar with tig just v it out good and burn it together. You may not get a good weld with the stick if your not use to it.
Ive had good luck with 7014s. But like jthomas said 6011 is great for welding anything reguardless of the condition, but 7018 needs to have very clean steel
The first 2 numbers are the filler rods tensile strength. 60=60,000lbs 70=70,000lbs
I think tube strong is like 120,000-125,000lb tensile strength. (Ex: somthing you might use on axle trusses and 4 link bars, or spring/shock mounts)
But it welds just like 7018
Like Kyle said, have clean metal when using 7018. But 7018 is a very very easy rod to use, you can use it as a drag rod.
