Title: 2000 dodge 4.7 blue smoke
Post by: twizted-ranger on February 12, 2014, 03:40:24 PM
well i have a 2000 dodge dakota that's got the 4.7 magnum 4.7 aka the "corsair"  and it's got 159,500 on her now it runs good but if i leave it sit more than 2-3 min while off she will blow blue smoke "oil" out the exaust and more if left alone over night.
now the problems did not start till i had the oil changed at uncle ed's those javascript:void(0); put 5w20 in it and dodge said O.o NO NOT DO THAT! only 5w30 or 10w30 should be used or dammage can result.
the only reason i had them change it is because it was to cold for me to do it outside and the oil was rather black  now after griping and moaning about it i am sol for now they won't do anything about it so i took it to the dealer and had them change it with the right oil and now the truck runs better i am thinkin the seals in the heads are totally shot now as a result of uncle ed's do any of you guys know of a good motor shop around clinton twp with in a respectable drive? please help

i do know that on 5.2 and 5.9 magnums that there is a "belly pan" on the underside of the intake and they are notorious for that gasket to go bad,
which will cause oil to get sucked out of the lifter valley and into your intake charge, hence burning oil, this happened to my 99 5.2, might be worth looking into

well i took it to a engine shop yesterday and found out that yea the heads are in need of a rebuild tho it's not all the oil shops fault they told me it's a combo of things 1 almost 160k on them 2 lack of maintence from the previous owner like not changing the oil and let me tell ya the oil is totally filthy alredy >.> i might just have the whole motor rebuilt or a used motor put in

My buddy put almost $3k into getting just the top end of his 4.7 done. No one had heads and the timing set up is not cheap and hard to set up correctly.

That sucks. I quit going to the mobil 1 oil change. Took 3 vehicles there in a row and they all started leaking oil right afterwards. Hopefully you get it figured out..

I highly doubt 20w compared to 30w is gonna cause any damage, all my years as a tech I've never heard of such a thing, yes a lighter oil may get past worn out seals easier then the heavy weight, and the only damage I could see possible over time would damage to the cat

Sounds like the lighter oil just brought light to an underlying issue

I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 motor it also blows blue smoke on start-up and can also smell it. After talking with many people with this problem this is a common tread for the 4.7. As it will not affect performance it is just annoying. This is why Chrysler no longer produces this engine. The 5.7  do not have this problem. They also get better gas mileage. The 4.7 was not a good motor.it started at 100,000 with mine. :( :(

the 4.7 litre engines are junk they have tons of issues with the top end, and very common for the heads to crack. its cheaper to replace the whole engine than it is to replace the heads. they also have an issue with the rocker arms coming off, my truck has the 4.7 it has had a hard life it has 175,000 on it and i'm just now having problems but have talked to guys with the same year trucks with the 4.7 and they have has issues with them starting around 75,000 miles

Put some straight 50 weight in it and call it good
