Title: hunting with an AR15
Post by: Kyle on May 22, 2014, 08:44:25 AM
Anybody got an AR? Or hunt with one? I'm wanting to use it for deer season this year. Just not sure on what kind of ammo I should use. I've thought about hollow points but I've also seen ball tips available. Any suggestions? I know a 5.56 is a small round so I wanna make sure its utilized as much as possible, and so there isn't a wounded deer walking around the woods

5 rd clip? Lol you need a 5 rd magazine. 5.56 is a decent round, I'd use regular ball ammo myself

I thought you couldnt legally hunt with .223/5.56x45 in mi except for small game? i know you can in other states. I use hornady 55 grain soft points. Coyotes love em! Lol

Yea rules say as long as its greater than 22 caliber. Which it is. I already got the mag, sucks cuz its so tiny. Is there any perks to using 62 grain over 55? I would assume more weight=more knockdown, I just haven't checked if there's any other rounds in that grain other than fmj

Wow that's a cool write up! I have a 1/7 twist cuz mine is military spec. I guess I'll have to try and find heavier loads somewheres

More important will be shot placement with such a marginal caliber. I'm not saying the 5.56 wont take down a deer because it is capable, but you better be sure your shots are perfect. If you have a larger caliber rifle i would strongly recommend using that over your AR just for pure knockdown power. If your dead set on using it hey more power to you, just make sure your confident enough to make a good clean ethical kill. Good luck and hope it works out for you.

I've been practicing at 70 yards with my green dot and 3x magnifier and have been able to hold a 4 inch grouping. I did some reading on ammo velocities and at 500yds a 5.56 still has 1k ftlbs of force behind it. As for options its either the ar or my 870

I have used fusion 62 grain and have killed deer instantly the last two times with a heart shots. this year I will be trying this http://www.winchester.com/Products/rifle-ammunition/Advanced/Power-Max-Bonded/Pages/X223R2BP.aspx  I found at Walmart. So far it kills paper really well.
