these axles are give aways. I understand that there are far superior front ends out there.
If I put a good set of joints in it, and bigger shafts, would it be able to hold its own against a 35-36" tire?
Seems the only time I broke them in stock form, was on 35s and wheel hop when pulling someone out
I really don't use 4x4 that much, so I wasn't sure if I should follow suit and swap a 60 in it. Orrrr?
Corp 10bolt 8 lug
I ran corp 10 bolt 6 lug with 35's with no problem. Just be smart, like don't hammer down with the wheel cranked. Common sense will keep you having fun.
Would a 4340 28 spline be as tough or tougher than a 1541 30 spline?
Bigger shafts are a waste of money, run it like it is.
What about a locker or spool?
No on locked front end 10 bolt. It won't rake it. I ran 42s with a 10 bolt front and only broke 2 shafts in 1 year.
I figured as much. The vehicle it's going in isnt a mud bogger, so I don't know if that increases its life span or not lol
Joe, is it the shafts you are breaking, or is it the joints?
Everytime I broke them, it was the Ujoint strap. I haven't ever sheared a shaft. So I can't tell if it's the joint that breaks, and tears the straps up, or if the straps are breaking, and the joint breaks during the carnage.
Maybe just a Ujoint upgrade could help me out?
when the bogger was smaller i had a 10 bolt 6 lug with stock 3.08 gear up front with a yukon locker, i ran RVT 36.5 tires that looked almost like ground hawgs. i jumped it, left it under water for a few nights, drove it to work, school, everywhere and beat the p00 out of it relentlessly. i only ever replaced the passenger wheel bearing once, checked the fluid every now and then and greased it. run it and dont worry.
its not the ujoint breaking. its not enough metal around the joint.
I have 10 bolt shafts in my front
Run 44 Swampers hard!!!!
Recommend spicer joints!!
What about a 4.56-4.88 gear?
If the ujoint seizes up it will tear the straps up. Put good, greasable joints in and take care of them.
