Title: Turbo 400 Output Shaft
Post by: 72BCD on March 19, 2015, 02:02:18 AM
Hello, switching to a TH400 from a TH350 before I get the truck out this year. The 400 I bought has a output shaft that stick out of the back of the case 4.5 inches. I read somewhere that if I have the 4.5 output shaft, I can get away with putting the female input shaft gear in my 205 and the output shaft will reach just fine without a sleeve. I understand I will need to get a adapter for a TH400 to a 205, but I'm just making sure that's correct. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Justin :)

==npth400 and  th350 have different splines as well not only length but diameter is well is what you have to deal with , I had the very same problem  I also just went from a np 208 to the np 203 and the th400  would bottom out in the np 203

Correct, but since I'm going through the 205 this year (as it's the stock one from '72), I'm going to replace the male 10 spline input gear in the 205 (truck was originally a manual) with a female TH400 32 spline input gear from Offroaddesign.com. My concern is the length of the output shaft in the trans. The one I have is 4.5 inches out of the back of the case, just wondering if I have to try and find another length output shaft or I can get away with it being the perfect length to match up perfectly with the 205 with the new input gear. Thanks, Justin.

as long as the dia. and spline are a good fit..
if the shaft is too long, cut it down and taper it w/ a 4 1/2" grinder.
