Title: Legal trailer length in michigan?
Post by: lilred on April 21, 2015, 07:06:22 AM
I'm trying to find information on the longest truck and trailer combination that is legal in michigan, either with operators license or license + endorsement. I'm seeing mixed answers from 50ft front bumper to rear of the trailer upto 75ft? Trailer I'm looking at would put me about 55ft with the suburban, I want to make sure it will be legal to pull before buying it

Michigan
Total length: 65 feet; trailer length: 45 feet; width: 102 inches (allows outside width to exceed 102 inches due to an appurtenance); height: 13 feet 6 inches.
That's what I found. I am 52 ft long total with my big trailer when state trooper was here to inspect it he didn't say anything about length so I would think you are fine.

I talked to a place that builds trailers earlier, They confirmed, 65 ft max from front bumper of truck to rear of the trailer. Also have to stay under 28K. Shouldn't be too hard just wanted to make sure. ==thanks

Your suburban should be rated for that much weight anyways. My truck is rated at 22,000 total.

Yeah I'm near the limit I believe. My weight won't change once setup only lose 1500lb and gain it back. Hopefully I can get it all set up and still be legal. I have accounted for the heavy components, sitting at 16,700lb (truck+trailer+cargo) but I still have a handful of 50-200lb things to add yet... Not sure what the rating is for a 84 3/4 ton suburban but I can already hear the Detroit crying lol

May have to put the trailer on a diet, looks like burb is rated for 15,500 loll
Dealing with 2900lb of water though, so could probably drain half if needed

Oh & michigan state police commercial division called me back, 65 ft limit on designated routes, 59ft max on non designated, whatever that means. He said designated routes were michigan roads and Highways so I guess you can only be 59ft going across fields and through ditches

It's a vendor enclosed/cargo trailer. Trying to get out of this shop. 7 days a week on 3rd shift, I'm not really sure where the last 6 months went.

I know you can total up to 75' but only when pulling triple and having a "R" endorsement on your license.

Thanks, I seen that somewhere also. Still limited by the 15,500 capacity of the truck. Working on a solution though lol

lol right. Thinking more like smaller trailer with water and supplies on a second truck. More gas, but even if it was legal I've seen what 14k does for a 6.2L, already gonna be a 50mph cruiser lol
