What year did they change from the TBI motor to the Vortec? Thinking about possibly putting a newer year cab on my 90 GMC frame. What years are compatible with my TBI motor?
88 to 95 are tbi
87-95 are TBI obviously 87 won't fit your truck tho ==roll is that extended cab?
Correct you are lil red My bad
95 they did the change over.... early model 95's are tbi.. late model 95's are vortec.... and if you get real lucky... like my brother you can occasionally find a 95 with a vortec engine with a tbi on it... running an obd2 computer with a tbi program.... they are so easy to modify and I love tbi.

90 GMC ext cab short bed 350 TBI
So 88-95 cabs will work on my 90 GMC ext cab short bed 350 TBI without having wiring or computer issues, right?
I would say thats a definite maybe. I'll let you know if I see any :P
So I was talking to this guy, and he said he put Vortec heads on his 350TBI block along with a carb - is that possible? Does it do any good?
YES 96 to99 and early 00vortblocksec heads will fit tbi and even back into the 70s blocks. they are great flowin g heads . you can get many different carbureted intakes . you can make big improvements for reasonable $$$ there are a lot of aftermarket companies that make the vortec heads with some improvements
Any idea what size of combustion chambers and valves on them..?
I want to say 64 cc 195 150 valves but not positive it has ben a while
Unless you buy a intake that's for putting a carb on tbi heads, you have to oval out the bolt holes. If you go that route use header bolts for the intake, easier.
correct the tbi and vortec heads have 8 intake bolts that go straight down . the older intakes have 12 bolts that go in on an angle. you can grind them out to fit but sometimes they are hard to get to seal. torque spec on the intake for the vortecs is very low something like 15 pounds
