Two years ago I was riding my mountain bike at Maybury state park with a few friends. I was first on the trails and just flying though them, next thing I know I'm in the emergency room.

There is quite the story to go with it but I've never typed it I just remember it from what I've been told, guess if people are interested I will write it up.

Thanks everyone, just make sure you tell your kids and yourself to wear a helmet since you never know when it would save your life. Here is the short version of the story behind it.

Short version is 5 of us went bike riding at Maybury Sate Park, I was leading down the trail and about 30 seconds in front of guy behind me, I remember going over a log then feeling warm and fuzzy like I fell asleep, my buddy behind me saw me get over the log but then something went wrong and I flew up and over the handle bars and did a face plant. He got there first and realized how bad it was and started to try and stop the bleeding. As the others arrive nobody has their cell phone, then the youngest member of the group arrives and has his cell phone since he just got it. Someone calls 911 and when they ask where you are all they can say is Maybury State Park, which is Huge! Some stranger at the park took the phone and a bike and went for the DNR Park Ranger Station and told the Paramedics how to get back to me. I don't know anything that's going on at this point, my friends said they had to hold me down cause I said I'm fine, I'll walk the rest of the way and don't call paramedics because they cost too much money. The paramedics arrive and put me in the back of a pickup truck and get me out of the woods and into an ambulance. My friends then hustle and chase the ambulance the 10 or so miles to the hospital where my parents are waiting, my friends called my brother and told him what's up and he called my mom and said "Mom what are you doing?, Hope your having a good night. Just so you know Tom is unconscious and being rushed to the hospital call Jash for details, bye" I wake up once or twice on the way but barely remember anything, the paramedics told my friends that I said on the way there "Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop and pick me up I greatly appreciated it." which made them laugh. I am then checked out at the Emergency room and I'm in there for a few hours strapped to the board, where they take Xrays, etc. As I'm waiting for results I'm laying there strapped to the board and my friends and family kept coming in and talking to me, I remember that much things I don't remember bits, they told me I would moan out in pain and then look around confused, and after a few times I was trying to figure out who was making all that noise and getting frustrated they won't stop, they told me it was me and at the time I did not believe them. After about 6 or so hours at the hospital I was released to go home, but told I will not be allowed out in the heat for the next week. I had cabin fever, I found ways to entertain myself and friends kept coming over to visit, I thought I would make fun of it when people make Napoleon Dynamite references to me that I would take this picture.

I have slowed down quite a bit and stopped using my front brake. Since my theory is that is what threw me over. But I still go out and ride because the last thing I want to do is to be afraid of it.

thanks everyone for your positive comments. When I got back to work after my accident people showed me pictures of them and/or their kids that had similar things happen to them, the one's daughter has been though a ton of surgery to fix her face back up and won't of had so much trouble if she had a helmet, but they figured it was no big deal cause she wasn't going far.

In my book the helmet is like the seat belt. But to each their own.
