for a 4.9L I6, to get the cam gear off the cam, do i HAVE to take the cam out????

mudslayer2008

What year ???  most late 80's and newer are pressed on. and you would need to pull the cam and have it pressed off unless you have a press to do it yourself.

ford4x4conversion

its a 1990.  and i really dont wanna have to take the cam out cuz its not even worth the tear down.

any way to get it out without taking out the cam???

mudslayer2008

only if there is a key way in the side of the cam then you can use a gear puller

ford4x4conversion

there is a bolthole in the middle of the cam then a little notch on the outside of the cam inside the gear.

is that what yr talkin about?

mudslayer2008

Yes  try using a gear puller but if it don't move after a 1/4 to 1/2 turn after the puller gets tight then stop you could damage the cam

ford4x4conversion

tried to use jaw puller, didnt work.

mudslayer2008

you may have to get a regular gear puller to pull it off it should come off I just talked to a ase master machanic and he said you do not need to pull the cam you just need a good gear puller.

ford4x4conversion

well, the fiberglass(?) piece broke, thats why i have to replace it, all the is left on the cam is the metal sleeve, dont know what to use to get it off...

mudslayer2008

what type of jaw puller r u using 2 or 3 ???

ford4x4conversion

i was using a 10" 5 ton puller.  Thinking of going back and getting the 2 ton puller.

ford4x4conversion

got it off. just took some redneck ingenuity. hahaha.  plus i beat it senseless with a hammer.

Thanks for the advice!!
