Ok, this is going to be a pretty stupid question. I just traded for a 1979 Chevy Short Bed Regular Cab. It has the 203 Transfer case with the front lock out hubs. The 4x4 shifter knob reads as follows:

4 low lock
4 low
N
4 high
4 high lock

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 4 LOW AND 4 LOW LOCK??

AND WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 4 HIGH AND 4 HIGH LOCK??

Also whats the best one to drive daily in with the front hubs unlocked??

the lock position locks the front and rear driveshafts together

Isnt that what regular 4 high/low does?

#3
regualr 4 hi and low is part time

LOCK is just that. lock ing the driveshafts together

so for the street you want 4hi  and hubs locked, unless you have a part time kit installed in the 203.

if you dont and you unlock the hubs and use hi or low you wont move, throw it in lock and it will work, but you are turning your front driveshaft and axleshafts

The full-time aspect of the 203 is all in the rear section of the unit. The case has an internal differential that selectively splits the power to the front and rear axles when the shifter is not in one of the locked positions. When shifted into Hi-Loc or Lo-Loc, the differential locks to provide equal power to both driveshafts. If you removed either driveshaft and tried to drive the truck with the case in the nonlocked position, the internal diff would send all the power to the yoke with the missing shaft. It?s just like an open rear axle differential, where all the power goes to the tire with the least traction. However, if the case was shifted into a locked position, power would be equally distributed to the front and rear, so you?d be able to drive the rig as long as one driveshaft was still in place.

BIG DOG

use lock   when wheelin    or need 4x4        use hi    for  drivin

SO should I leave the front hubs unlocked or locked when driving on the street? Also It seems like the 4x4 shifter only clicks into 4 low lock and 4 high lock. Why is that?

if the tcase has not been modified with a part time kit then the right way is hubs locked and 4hi (not 4hiloc) when driving on the road. Only use the loc position when you need true 4wd such as when off road or on slippery roads.

A.J. Hall

Is there any way to tell if the t-case has been modified with the part time kit?

yea put in in the 4hi or 4low with the hubs unlocked and if it still moves then it has a parttime kit if not then it's still fulltime.

A.J. Hall

OK I will but how come it feels like the shifter only "clicks" into 4 hi lock and 4 low lock. Is there like a guide plate that should be there and I should know when its in each one.

OK so heres whats going on:
Took the shifter boot off and the handle for the 4x4. If I lock the hubs and push the shifter all the way back to the 4 high lock posistion I can still brake torque. Same thing with the shifter all the way up in the low lock posistion. But I know the 4x4 works. I have used it before. Im about to just put a new tailsjaft in my 241 and use that.lol.

OK scratch my last post. I unlocked the front hubs and put the truck in 4 high and the truck wouldnot move. So that means I was in in 4 high not 4 high lock right?

2nd: next step from above:  I locked in the front hubs and then I could move fine but I could not brake torque. (rear tire on ice with peg leg). Shouldnt the rear tires be able tp spin in four high with the hubs locked in without the front tires spining?

No  on the 2nd part. Its a Full-0time t-case. To truly drive around in 2wd you need to unlock the hubs and put it in 4 High Lock. Then you will be in 2wd.  If its in just 4 High  and the front are unlocked the t-case will send the power to were the least amount of resistince is I.E. the front axle.  Does not take a whole lot to spin and axle shaft. But a tire it take more power.'

I dont know if I help or not
