actually doing the work isnt that hard... hard part is finding a place to do yer axle shafts

GRABBER-GREEN MACHINES

all i want to do is to shortin the axle up enough to fit her under a large lawn tractor so i can run my big tires on her  ya think i could just cut the axle shafts and weld em back in after i shorten em for a live axle rear end its not a high speed nor practical application..work or not?

no i highly doubt it would work for a while....... if not break istantly

idk seams like a full penitration stick weld would hold it all together keep in mind theres only 20 hp to the rear tires.. but i dont think id ruin a axle for that

Good luck with welding it. There's no way it would hold.

if you attempt to weld the axle shaft  grind both sides to a point (doesnt have to be to an actual point but put a decent angle on both sides)  and weld all the way around ot completely fill it back together.   more then likely wont hold up to much but it might work for a lil while.  i did a similiar thing for my dad with a set of hardened steel chisel sp? bits for a demolition hammer he uses to take up tile floors and  its held up good so far  and that damn demolition hammer puts a beating on them bits.    just gotta know what ot set the welding machine up to get good penitraion into the metal.

ive held certs for mig in all pos and stick i can weld friggen awsome been doin  it fer 5 years strait thats what i planed on doin was grindin em out and weldin them back in with high tinsel 7018 rod ive welded some knarly crap and its strong but i think i will just try and find a short axle ..if ya all know of any short ones around tell me

Ever try welding leaf springs??? Should have about the same out come. Some things just were'nt ment to be welded.

The welds would probably hold up on a lawnmower.....LOL but the problem might be how true the shaft would be when you're done definitely tack it together first. Then clamp the shafts down to something that is flat. Weld a little at a time letting it cool between welds. Like the someone else said bevel the edges where you will be welding. then weld it bigger than the shaft and grind it down or turn in a lathe. good luck..!!

few years ago i seen an old manure spreader that used a chevy 12 bolt to drive the spreader.
it was only about 20 inches across,  its gone if you could find another one laying in the woods look real
close at the rake that flings the chit and see what drives it

JeepinJohn

find two older jeep rearends, with the offset pig .take the short tube off one and put it on the other rearend.

I have seen many of those Mini mod pulling tractors with motor cycle engine do it. They cut the axle ends off and machine a new flange with a hole in it and weld both sides.

yea i do lawnmower pulls , or did now im inta muddin with em..and they float really good to
