Hey,i just sold my jeep and i am thinking about picking up a trail rig.I would only use it on orv, private and state land.Do i need to have it licensed, insured, and an orv sticker? Or can i just get an orv sticker and drive it on the shoulder of the road to the trails? Trav

unless it has plates and insurance pretty sure it has to go on a trailer. i live in alpena also and was wondering who you are and if you do any wheeling around here because all the wheeling we do is on private property an if you r interestewd ill let you know when and where

if you read the small print on the roadside ORV's it says stuff llike no more than 13'' rims and seat not being more than a certian hight from teh ground,   so basicly you cant run a truck down the side of the road with a ORV sticker, either has to be plated or trailered.

If its licensed insured and stickered,, the dnr ALMOST, cannot mess with you..and.. you can Almost be i most places you would like to be. But remember.,.If you are not on the road. you can only be where you can get to resonably in a 2 wheel drive. Some insurance companies do offer insurance by the month.

From what I understand... in the Alpena and surrounding areas... private land is about all that is left to wheel on... ATV or truck, or anything.

True?
In need of a yank strap?  PM me... I have 'em!

the harvester

very true ken that is why we all  wheel on private property only .cost too much to keep getting things out of impound

derbydude

is that devils lake trail any good , still open ??? . whats your opion . thanks mike

the harvester

it is still open but thats all it is is a trail kind of boring if you ask me but thats my opinion

So what are the actual laws? Can i get an orv sticker, license plate, and put a orange triangle on it and keep it under 35mph on the shoulder of the road without having to get insurance? Or do i need plates, insurance, and orv sticker? Do u guys around here know of any cheap rigs forsale? Trav

I would almost bet for a (vehicle)........and on state land........you are going to need a PLATE and Insurance..keep in mind a couple things ( what if I hit somebody elses truck.........or any accident for that matter).

Honestly....If you are in doubt (call your local DNR up there and speak with them about it)

Also OVR stickers are alittle overrated (in my opinion) I believe with an ORV sticker you can go on trails that are 52 inches or less (wide)........basically ATV trails.......cause a truck isnt going to fit a 52 inch wide trail.

An ORV sticker doesnt mean you can just drive off of a 2-track and right into the woods.....AKA...(making your own trails).........because thats illegal as hell and the DNR will ticket you for that.

Where I trail drive at (Cody/Estey rd--M-61 state land 2 tracks)........I've never been stopped for not having an ORV sticker.......and I've never bought an ORV sticker either....and I've driven up around there for 12 years.

basically, I think its individual dnr officer discretion.....on what they think is appropriate for that area..............at the MOUNDS 4x4 area.........you need a ORV sticker.............some other state land areas........you dont need one.

you have to have a orv on any designated trail  and if you are not on a trail you have to have plates and insurance .  hey ghost what r u looking 4 and what do you want to spend

Thanks for the info.I am just planning on getting it plated, insured, and an orv sticker whenever i get my new ride.
