ROCK

i believe it would have a 44 closed knuckle drum brake front and either an eaton or d60 rear. Good luck post pics if u buy it

BigFrank

for what he wants i could scrap it and maybe break even  or take it to the mounds and beat  it to death then   ive got some minnie 33 swampers that will bolt on closed knuckle and drums dont sound good  ??? ??? ???

FYI I'm pretty sure the 73-87 front axle will bolt right in to the older trucks.

Yes a newer axle will bolt in, look for a 71-77 Dana HD44 front, as it is the same axle but will be disk brake up front.  The rear will be either a dana 60 or the larger round housing Eaton, both will start out 4.10 gearing, with 4.56 also being offered. Check the transfer case for what model it is...........it will either be a NP205........or possibly the smaller Dana 20.......both are gear driven.

Old truck frame is narrower, isnt it??

In the rear section of the frame on a pre 72 GM it is different, to mount a post 73 model rear axle in a pre 72 would mean cutting the axle pads and rewelding them in the correct position and vice versa for those pre 72 axles being swapped in 73-up GM trucks.  but the front spring width (axle pad to axle pad) is the same as 73-87 GM 4x4s. No mods are needed.

So the frame is narrower but only in the back. I thought it was as I recall, and Im guessing that the driveshafts are different length due to different length of pinion and the u-joint caps are probably different size too. Im just guessing, lol...  ??? ;D

BigFrank

i  was kinda wonderin about  the  perch width  are the 2wd rears that had the wishbone  susp versus  a leaf spring 71/72  2wd and 4wd the same ???  ive got 3 d60 rears out of the 71 72 2wd leaf spring trucks that i saved from scrappin out trucks and a couple of the eaton ones that came under the wishbone style there were alot of variations i know they had  im thinkin the d60 would bolt in the 4wd ???  and are those d60 from these trucks any good as far as bein tufff???  ill have to take a tape measure to the farm tommorow and do some measuren    i really need a tow rig  or somethin to build one out of

4x4xdodgeman

the trucks also came with 4:88 gears. a friend had 1968 with 350, 4sp. that was a slow truck!!

The frame is the same width as a '73 to '87, what makes the diff in spring width is the hangers.

old school truck dude

So a guy has to change the hangers too.. Can they be made to fit on there or do ya just gotta make some new ones?

All you have to do is move the spring pearches inboard to put a '73 up axle in a '72 down truck
