Ok so I burned up my 700r4 with my big block in my 86 heavy chevy.  Got my hands on a 2wd th400 for a really good price but I didn't realize it cost so much $$ and time to convert to 4wd.  But I also have a th350 trans laying around.  But I think we had a problem that the output shaft was too short for the 208 tcase??  I don't really remember.  Just wondering what the cheapest way to get my truck back on the road.  Any help would be much appreciated

the shafts on the  400R4 and the th350  are differnt  sizes.

just need differnt  t case for the th350, or  change out put shaft in 400r4 trany ==dunno

That 350 turbo can be made to work with your Np208, you can swap out the short shaft it has, and install a 2wd 350 turbo shaft which is longer (actually alittle too long) but you can either have it shortend or run an aluminum spacer in between it and the T-case adaptor to make up the longer distance.

Or.......get yourself a Np203 adaptor from a 350turbo/203 combo.  That adaptor with some small modifications, ie........welding on several small ears and drilling a few extra holes...........can bolt right up to your Np208 as well as your 350 turbo (which more than likely had a 203 hooked to it in the first place)..........this idea is the cheapest....maybe 150.00 or less ( email MUDBUSTER on here) he has done this procedure to several np203 adaptors with postive results.

The 400 turbo 2wd trans you have would work..........as it is.....but you would have to run a divorce mounted dodge NP205 transfer case and have new driveshafts made up including the extra one which would go between the trans and T-case. This route would probably run you about 500.00 (price of divorced 205,,,and new driveshafts made)

Yes Dave is correct...same spline...different lengths.

Personally I would tear the 700r4 apart and try to figure out what is wrong with it...you can get a basic rebuild kit for about $300.

What are the symptoms?

Yup.  Me and my buddy are gonna tear apart the 700r to build it to haul a 30ft enclosed trailer.  The problem is I lost 3rd on up gears.  Still got 1st,2nd, and reverse.  The TV cable came disconnected so im thinkin that's the cause of all my grief

for a big block run a turbo 400 i run the turbo 400 and np 205 and love that setup toughest set up i have ever had t350 were not built to handle  a big block. i had a 400 and 208 in my suburban and that was a great setup  either way stick with the 400 stronger trans

I say run the th400 and get a divorced np205.... but then again the way you drive, I have a t5 out of a 2wd s10 should work fine  puz e

Oh & I have a book here all about tearin th350's & 400's apart if you need it

i am runing a 350th with a 205 bolted up to a 463 buick big block and i have not had any issues with it. Also a lot depends on w3eight, gears, and tires too.... but i would go with a 205 t-case, they are just more reliable than the 208. But you do get a betrter gear reduction with the 208.
Like stated before you can always use a 2wd trans and devorce the t-case, either way gooing to cost a bit of money!

id say fix the 700r4 and build it RIGHT. less modificatios to make to get it back on the road and less headaches later. spend a little money now, save a little money later

you can go with 350/208 but you need to get the  tail shaft kit so you do have to mess with your drive shafts.  no has said that to you. but if you just rebuild the 700r4 or get the kit for 350 trans you can bolt in and go.    thank of your drive shafts
