87 Ford Ranger 2WD

Well I got this truck as basicly a shell. 99% rust free good looking truck. standard cab short bed 2 Wheel Drive. I want it to be a street machine but im stuck! I dont know what to do with it.  I planned on using my Cleveland but it would be more money and more trouble than I want to mess with...sooo, here I am!
I have pretty easy access to anyone of those engine combinations. Small block id like to run the C4 trans. and im thinking manual if I run the 2.9. 
Whats everyone think???

im starting to lean more towards the turbo 2.9 since It would be more driveable and I could still get around 18 mpg....idk
