I found a pretty good deal on a stage 1 performance chip made by "jet" for my 97 half ton dodge. The reviews online are all good but my trucks got 250XXX miles on it. I know the chips gonna adjust my air/fuel mixture and shift points but is it gonna be to hard on my old tranny? Has anyone used one before and did it make any difference? I've got duals ran with stock manifolds and ill have a k&n cold air intake as well. Any input would be good. Thanks

1997 is OBDII computer and does not take a chip, they have a flashable PCM prom, you need a laptop and a program like HP Tuners or EFI Live to program them, if they do actually make a chip it probably does little to nothing in ways of performance gains because usually they are just some type of resistor to trick the the PCM into dumping a little more fuel VS a laptop and program you can change wide open throttle shift points, transmission line pressure, fuel curve, timing and eliminate things like egr valve, top speed restrictions, post cat O2 sensors, air pumps and do numberless other things.

My suggestion would be to troll some dodge forums and find out who does custom tuning on your exact year, make and model of truck....then again with 250k on it I probably would not bother unless the engine and transmission was rebuilt and in excellent shape.

with 250k i wouldnt even think about doing it with a dodge trans unless its a stick

Actually with a custom tune it will help increase the longevity of the transmission by increasing line pressure and eliminating any clutches slipping. I just checked with waitformeperformance shop and they do tune Dodges, they did the Dyno tune on our Bravada for $250 down in Indiana and you can order a mail order tune from them for $75 if you send them your computer or you can just buy a computer from them for $160ish and keep your old one for a spare.

jet chips are for obd2 but i hear thay do nothing

BigCountryDRC

Whats obd2? lol and driving a chevy will never be an option! If its not going to make any diff I dont really see any use in buying it. I know they make them for my truck cause i looked them up on jets website thats not really the issue. I just want to know if my old trucks gonna be able to handle it.

1997 is OBDII computer and does not take a chip,
since when does OBDII  NOT take a chip? the chips ARE for OBDII... cory you will gain little to no performance off a stage 1. with the chip you have to run 89 octane or better.

7d9 z28 had a stage one in his chevy truck. he claimed that it was a noticeable difference. his was just a resistor type that just plugs in line of the computer harness and you can take it back out and it will all go back to normal

i would run it, i highly doubt that it would ruin your transmission. but i personally wouldnt pay sticker price for one

Oh it has a chip but the chip that is in it is flashable, that's the point I was getting at, why buy a chip when you can just reprogram the current chip with EFI Live? And OBDII the chip is soldered into the board, take an OBDII computer apart and investigate.

The only chip I have ever seen for an OBDII was just a resistor that plugs in between the IAC Sensor tricking it into thinking the air temp is colder than it is by adding some resistance in the circuit (They claim that is a chip) to trick it into dumping more fuel. I have never seen an OBDII chip that actually installs on the board. Jet also sells power programmers that plug right into the OBDII port but they also do little.

Well guys i really appreciate it but i'm gonna go ahead and give it a shot. For $75 im not out anything if i dont notice any difference. Next its gonna be a good set of headers. Ill let you guys know how it turns out I should know something this evening.

i got a  jet stage 2 for my 91 gmc jimmy might of helped

BigCountryDRC

Well total install time was about 45 seconds and the only tool i had to use was my knife. I believe there is a little more pep in my truck more towards the top but its still kinda weak on the low end. Also theres a noticable difference in shift points. Shell run all the way into the red if I let it. I'd say it was worth $75 all day long. Anyway thanks guys -Corey

Thinking i might need to freshen up this old 360. I plan on re-building anothe 360 then swapping them out eventually. Then from there ill know a little more. Id like to get a set of 3/4 axles and springs anyway and most of those have 4:10 gears

http://www.gforcechips.com/  WISH I WOULD HAVE SEEN THIS POST SOONER. I AM THINKING ABOUT GETTING 1 FOR MY 01. PEOPLE IN THE REVIEWS HAVE SAID THEY THREW AWAY THEIR JET CHIPS FOR ONE OF THESE GFORCE CHIPS AND LIKE IT ALOT BETTER.

BigCountryDRC

Yeah ive never ran one before and i dont really think i know of anyone who has. Well in a gas motor anyway. I could tell a slight difference and any extra power is more than welcome in my truck. I didnt really have a choice in brand cause i bought mine off craigslist. I guess all you can really do is read the reviews and hope for the best. If i was gonna buy new though id get a programmer.
