You want a part that costs $97. You don't have the money, so you borrow $50 from your mom and $50 from your dad. You now have $100. There is no tax and you pay $97 for the part. You are given $3 in change. You give $1 to your mom and $1 to your dad and you keep $1. You now owe your mom $49 and your dad $49 and you have $1. Adding the $49 that you owe your mom and the $49 you owe your dad you get $98 total. Add your $1 to that $98 and you get $99. Where did the extra $1 go!

that was already included. 98 + 1 still not 100

your double subtracting that dollar the 97 plus the 3 you have left is the full 100...of that you got 50 from each parent but you gave 2 of that 3 left to each parent equating to 49 dollars from each parent equaling 49 from each parent 49 plus 49 is 98 minus teh one dollar you kept is the 97 that you spent on the part

still not the point. the price of the part was never in question. there is a misssing dollar!

it would be 48.50 plus the dollar you give them then split your dollar .50 to each parent and you get 100.00  Your subtracting the two from 50.00 when you should actually be subtracting 1.50 from each.

Yah, the answer has been stated, so won't bother restating it. It took us a few minutes to figure out what was going on as well. Kinda fun to figure out when you're buzzin! lol Just thought it was a fun one tho.  ;D a=f

I'm sure glad these math questions don't come up in every day language like our teachers used to try and make us believe!   ++peace
