Cummins baby.  There in the big rigs, reliable, straight 6 so they run forever.

My 6.5 is going strong.  Its just like any other vehicle.  Hit or miss.  Talked to a guy at work that had to replace all kinds of stuff on his 07 Cummins that wasn't even at 150k miles.

i found a 2001 Dodge 2500 with a 5.9l cummins in it. it has 215xxx miles body clean as hell overall the whole thing is clean and they want a lil under 10 grand for it. i talked to a friend who is a diesel mechanic and he told me to call and get a ecu report to see if its ever been chipped or reprogrammed so im going to do that monday

i agree.. my 6.5 in my van is stl running good  dont get me wrobg i did spend a grand on a remote pmd and a new ip but it wasnt that bad of a fix. and for having almost 400k miles. i think its been a good work vehicle.

On a side note. i liked the pre 98 cummins the non h.o ones  seems they slightly went down hill after that. i had a 96 with 600k (used to pull trailer with gokarts from mi to fl. tx. ga) not one problem with the engine in that rig. but the trans let go 2 times

As a diesel Lover in general I can attest that all have their flaws. If you want rock solid engine reliability go with a cummins, drivetrain wise fords have always had an edge. Chevys haven't changed much, still cheaply built but seem to hold together ok for light use. Duramax have had a lot of injector issues, as well as the power strokes. Dodges have been known for weak Trans but is easily fixable.

If it were me I'd buy a dodge cummins and address the Trans ( and lift pump if 24v). Cheap to fix and a drivetrain that will last a million miles.

A simple valve body and converter upgrade will make a dodge tranny very capable, and a good lift pump on a 24v will ensure long life.

Good luck on finding a truck.

i got a 6.2 but im a cummins fan... If gm would get back to work on the 4.5 non isuzu duramax it would be awesome. 01+ 7.3l powerstrokes were pretty bulit proof minus the torque covertors.

rangerwheelinmike

I would buy a 6.0 power stroke before any other one

Im hardcore chevy guy, but if I could afford to buy a new diesel it would be a Dodge.

Blake Scheuneman

If your just haulin a bogger once in a while you don really need a diesel...they get better fuel mileage but do the math of maintaing a diesel vs gas and fixing something when it breaks on a diesel vs gas..and diesel is more expensive. Your not going to save any money chances are you'll spend a bit more.

But if your set on getting one...I've had a 99 powerstroke and I had an 89 cummins...the cummins impressed me way more than the ps. Id go with a 12 valve
