I have a 77 chevy with a 400sbc, 203, 350 trans and will be going up to a 35's. My truck is so hard to shift into 4lo so i am trying to see if i should leave it locked in or just go to 4hi and leave 4lo alone?

ShortTemperd

I run nothing but 4low but that's just me and you gotta keep and eye on trans temps in 4low if your really getting it for long periods

it all depends on your gearing and horsepower.. i run low its easyer on parts and keeps trans temps down using hi will put more stress on the trans and other parts unless your geared to use it

I am running just a stock 400sbc so their is not a ton of power, i am praying that it dont pop out of 4lo when i romp on it. For trans temp ill be looking for a big trans cooler and getting a gauge.

thought 4L heats up the trans? Unless its just me but my trans always got hot after bogging for awhile

your trans will aways get hotter bogging then driving you being hard on it but using hi range with make the trans and stall slip more and that makes alot more heat. my truck has to run low or it will over heat

BIG DOG

boggin  hp. torque and wheel speed         if your in low and cant get into 3rd gear  you will burn your stuff up running hi range for sure it just labors to much.  thats why it gets hot faster in hi range.

Well every time I drop it into 4wd I put it in 4l so I guess I couldn't argue on which one gets hotter first loll

ok so ill run it in 4 low until i can get some more power out of her. Is it worth getting a trans cooler with a fan?

fordrunner

I run 2wd or 4hi on the trails but when I plan on dropping in to the mud or playing on the rock I was in 4lo and shifted when needed for more wheel speed

If you like replacing trannys and labor ing your motor then run high range but I would recommend low range for everything except drivin on the rd, I even bog in low range when I run 2wd just unlock the hubs and away you go
no rest for the wicked

ya i am for sure gonna run 4lo, i really want to see how its gonna do in the mud. Ill have to go find a wheeling spot

eyeless goat bogger

I run 4 low. Even w 538 gears.  Better chance you don't fry the transmission.  Plus you can optimize higher trans gear if you have the power to spin them.
