I'm picking up an 87 ranger on a 70's bronco frame. I know its got a Dana 20 case but there at two types. Anyone tell me how to ID em? I need to know so I can order a twin stick set up.

Thanks

Should GOOGLE 66-77 Broncos, and see when those TWO different Dana 20's were used.

What exactly is "different" about these TWO different types of Dana 20's?

The shifters are different as far as I know. Just got the truck home I'll crawl under it and get pics later.

There's a straight pull then a j shift style the j shift pulls all the way back then hooks right and up is there a shift knob on it if there is post a pic I could tell you

Keeping in mind that his truck was built using other drivetrain parts, I'll add that I have never seen the (  J-shift ) Dana 20 used in ANY factory Ford built product.  That was only used in Jeeps and some Chevy 69-72 / 73-74 Chevy 4x4s.

If you have the J-shift, there will be a "pivot box" that must be kept greased for the shift lever. Pretty sure you can't twin stick a J-shift dana 20.

Thank you for the clarification FordRunner,  I didn't think Ford used that style of shift pattern on their Dana 20's.   I've seen it on 70's full size Jeeps and on 69-74 Chevys, and have one from a 72 Chevy blazer.

I wasn't aware that a twin stick was made for them, they have a real funky shifter/pivot box, or at least my Chevy version does  as its part of the T-case adaptor assembly.

The eb 's are a little weird when it comes to most there parts. There's 3 different rear axles and don't get factory disk brakes till 76 there are a lot of bronco only wierd parts

Early broncos had the straight shifter and older bronco had the j shifter . had a 66 bronco with straight shifter 66 and put in a c-5 auto came with a j-shifter out of a 75 bronco . hated it never could get it back into 2wd after four wheeling .shifter was bad I guess .but read a little bit up on it and it said they had always had problems going back into 2wd with auto trans ..
Jeep has a dana 20 to but different animal . They will not interchange .

If your going to build the motor up don't use an c-4 , they like to blow up every time you get on it .
To build up any horse power pick up an c-6 with an 205 transfer case out of and pickup and have it built to your engine rear end gears ,the cam and converter  . they have two types of c-6 one for small block and one from big block .and if you pick one up from and 78 or 79 bronco be careful and make sure it for a small block 351 w and not an 351 m .
