shock question

? how to measure shocks so i know what length to get. Changing out my half ton axles for 3/4 tons and want to put new shocks on but how do i measure the length should i leave them on the truck and measure or take them off and then measure? any help appreciated!!!

I jack it up with axle hanging. Measure and add bout 3".

Are you asking because the shock mounts hang down further on the 3/4 axle? I cut my mounts off and moved them to the top to keep them out of the mud.
