deisel exhaust ???

I have been thinking about putting a bigger exhaust system on my truck  and was wondering  if the big coffee can end/tip has any benefit or doo people put them on there just for  looks   I myself  think it looks goofy but was just wondering

if you put one of those tips on you might as well use a 55 gallon barrel as a stack I think they are stupid as hell and serve no purpose.
