Tranny Preference

What type of tranny would you guys recommend for a daily driver/ weekend wheeler, Stick or Auto? I can get a hell of a deal on a buddies k1500 with a 305 5spd. But I have would have to learn how to drive a stick as all my vehicles have been autos. So what would you guys recommend/prefer?

I say if the deals good enough buy it, I wouldn't try doing any hard wheeling with it untill you got good at driving, mainly stuff like taking off on hills

how would it do on the trails (mostly 2 tracks) and mud on occasions?

i used to wheel my f-150 with a 5 speed and honestly, i prefered a stick. i only had a 300 straight 6 in mine but when i put it in first gear and low lock, i had all the torque that a V8 would have, it was amazing. i had no problem in mud and trails were easy as an auto for me....

we have a 3 speed and we like it but for big hills it sucks becuse you have to shift down but it works great

I would find out what model of (tranny) the truck has..........and see how off roaders have used it or liked it.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say your buddies truck has the... GETRAG 5 speed...., which has an aluminum housing.   I've heard both good and bad things about that trans, plus side is that it has a OD and bad side is they werent made for alot of abuse, the tranny housing ( i was told ) is non rebuildable.

If the truck wasnt going to be heavily bogged, then trans should hold up fine.

But for heavy mud bogging, you cant beat the old cast Iron SM420 or SM465 4spd's with a granny gear
