Not the power company's fault.  There are resources to help people in that persons situation.  A simple phone call would solved all of this person's problems about keeping his heat on.

I dont agree with that dave

I work for consumers and we are not allowed to turn off utilities for extended periods during certain times of the year

Second this man was 93 frickin years old  and no one from the city contacted him to explain how the device worked
so he didnt even know what was goin on

Third  if a concerned neighbor would have checked on him befor 4 days maybe he would still be here

IF IT WASNT FOR A WHOLE BUNCH OF BEAURACRATIC bull p00 THIS OLD MAN MAY (MAY) HAVE HAD A FEW MORE YEARS  AND THE POWER CO. (NO NOT THE POWER CO) THE CITY OF BAY CITY IS A BUNCH OF MONEY HUNGRY GREEDY BASTARDS THAT OBVIOUSLY ARE OBLIVIOUS TO THE STATE OF AFFAIRS IN MICHIGAN  THIS MAN WAS 93 DID HE HAVE DIMENSIA  DID HE ALZHEIMERS WAS HE MENTALLY STABLE        DID THE CITY BOTHER TO CONTACT HIM WITH ANYTHING BESIDES MAIL TO TALK TO HIM  ITS BEEN SO COLD I HAVENT EVEN WANTED TO GO OUTSIDE AND IM ONLY35  SO HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO IT IF YOUR 93   THIS IS JUST A BUNCH OF bull p00 AND IMO ITS A GOOD THING THE GUY DIDNT HAVE KIDS OR THEY SHOULDA SUED THE EVER LIVIN p00 OUTTA THE CITY OF BAY CITY AND WON

A city utility worker had installed a "limiter" device to restrict the use of electricity at Schur's home on Jan. 13, said Bay City Manager Robert Belleman.

There was no word Monday whether the device had blown out or confirmation of the amount Schur owed to Bay City Electric Light & Power; city officials did not respond to a call seeking comment.
Belleman said he didn't know if anyone made personal contact with Schur to explain how the device works.

The body was discovered by neighbor George Pauwels Jr., who said Schur had almost $1,100 in unpaid electric bills. Pauwels told the newspaper he saw cash clipped to those bills on the kitchen table on the day he found Schur's body.

im sorry that was uncalled for but its  the responsibility of the power co to inform  a resident if they are changing or working on their service  not just do it and hope they know

I respect your opinion and I agree that it is a sad tragedy.  I had one of those devices installed at my home when I couldn't walk (or earn money) because of breaking my leg.   The unit restricted electricty use to 10 amps (which ain't much).  I will admit that I had to figure out how to resest the thing on my own.

ok well i have mixed opinions on this. yes i think it is a sad tragedy and i feel bad for any family or friends he may have had and i think the city could have handled it better but at the end of the day the person who owns the home and lives there is responsible for what happens in that household. if he didnt have the money theres programs to help that. if the guy didnt have the state of mind to be able to handle the situation then it sounds like he shouldnt be living alone to begin with. theres no one side to this unfortunant situation but i do hope the familes of the elderly and the people working in the power companies and cities that handle this stuff learn something by this and adjust procedures as needed just a sad tradedy
