yer not gunna find anything much tuffer then the 465 why do u want to change it ???  i dont remember ever seein or here about any other trans/t case thats a stick that would have the same t case drop side for yer front axle  i think 88 or newer trucks had a aluminum 4 speed but not shure and the t case would be on the driver side  i think   if yer lookin for mialage id say go with a auto like a 4l60 or 700r4

how do  convert it to auto?? like i said lol i dont know the first thing about transmissions or transfer cases. would i be able to just put in a floor shifter and wire up the clutch pedal
the transmissions i have for both are noisy and never been rebuilt one has fourth gear ate out of it and its the 465 weighs a ton. i just was looking for something i could change quicker and make it easier on my self in the long run. the 465 guzzles the gas and top speed is like 73 miles an hour before its starts to whine and shake.

tyhe petal will unbolt slide of  and change the steering colum or  run a floor shifter  theres numerous trans that will work with yer t case  just make shure ya get the right spline count and proper adapter or peice between trans a t case  check out 7387 chevynut post in garage tech this will give you a better i dea what trans will work

the 400 and the 465 are supposed to be the same spline count, all you'd need to do is find the right adaptor plate to hook the trans and t case together. and youd have to change the flywheel one the motor to an auto flexplate, and since it's a 350 it's no big deal and not part of the ballancing any way

Only for 81-91 SM465's trannys........cause they have 32 spline output shafts.

the 1968-80 SM465 had a 10 spline output for Np205's/203's

Best bet for auto trans swap is a 350/Np205 or a 700R4/NP208  since those are common sets to find.

If you wanted another stick trans..........you could go with the NP833 which was an oddball GM trans offred in 81-85/86 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton 4x4's. its a 4spd trans, but has overdrive.

GM also offered a 3spd on the column with the Np208, but both of these (light weight weaker) stick trannys are hard to find, because not many were ordered/built in 81-87 chevy trucks.

You best bet, is to get another SM465, and keep on truckin with it, also keep in mind, if you do a auto trans swap...................more than likely you will need new driveshafts...........at the very least you'll need a new rear driveshaft.

The Sm465 is one of only 2 manual stick trannys GM ever built that for ultra stength, has gained such a tough reputation. Later alumnimum GETRAG 5spds are non rebuildable, and alot weaker.

I dont know anybody who does, but i'd find another used one, instead of a rebuild, you might have alot of cash tied up in a trans shop.

unless you can find somebody who can rebuild it on the side.
