ok my girlfriends dad bought her a 2001 Aztek awhile back and hes been doing some work to it. well they took it for a drive and he noticed it started shifting hard when it got hot so he replaced the transmission shift solenoid.  so we get it all back together and go to start it and i turn the key and everything come on (lights, radio, dash, etc) but it wouldnt roll over. All it did was click and nothing. he checked the battery connections and they were both fine. he then crossed the starter and it rolled over started but wouldnt stay running. The key was in the on position. when we replaced the solenoid we un bolted the engine cradle dropped it done and lifted the body up to get the pan off. were just sumped because it started and drove fine the day before someone help us out im clueless.

Something must have come unhooked. Maybe a ground wire or something.

trace your grounds.  theres a clump of them on one of the front trans bolts. you also may have pulled a connector or wire out of a connector
lowering it.

What's clicking? The starter? How long does it run for when jumped directly? Check the starter connections "wiggle" test everything, check your neutral safety switch, ( prolly built into the range selector part of shift linkage cable)

When they start but die right out is a symptom of theft mode.

x2 My grand am did that after I changed a part, had to turn the key on (i think try to start it) then leave the key on for 15 minutes... but the procedure changes all the time. The ECM needs to learn the new part.

if the security light is flashing with the key on not trying to crank it then theres your problem. look up the theft reset proceedure for that car and do it.
