4x4fun

This project started with an 86 chevy 4 door 1 ton duelly I picked up about a year ago. . 140k miles on a carberated 454 with a 4 speed.. ive upgraded the cooling system with high volume water pump and large 4 core radiator. . A side from replacing the rear springs its been a good ride..  now im starting to loose oil pressure while warm at an idol, so ive founda tbi 454 complete with computer and harness out of a 94 p30 van..  motor ran great before it was pulled, lots of oil pressure..  now onto the fun part, combining both harnesses to make everything work..  more to come..

get it together man  you got the parts there  I was told by the boat guy  that's the same harness in the cab chassis  trucks  ;D ;D ;D

I got the block tore down, the bottem end is in excellent condition. .  Heads are off getting freahen up. Once they are done, ill change out the factory timing chain for a double roller and put it all back together. ..  still on the hunt for a 93/94 4l80, prolly after tgw..

A little more progress, found a 94 4L80 trans and had it rebuilt.. I have to go pick it up taday..  I had it built for towing, shift kit, all new clutches and a heavy duty torque converter..  just a couple more missing links and ill have everything needed to make a 86 1 ton fuelie..

I received some parts today, new fuel tank, pump and pickup assembly..  have my shifting linkage figured out, going back to collem shift.. make it look factory..  hopfully ill get the change out started after thanksgiving..  More updates to come..

Much progress has been made on the project.  I pulled the old motor the day after T-day, ended up having to redo both from cab mounts and floor boards raising the cab up to where it should of been creating enough space to fit that big ol' 4L80 in with very little room to spare. while motor was out the fire wall, heater core and inner fenders got patched up if needed and some fresh paint..  The computer has been mounted in the proper location using brackets I scavenaged out of a late 80s tbi k5 along with the air cleaner and a few other factory tbi parts..  we had pre made the wiring harness for the computer and attached it to the block before installing, most of that is all hooked up except fusable link end.. motor is back in, use the cross member from the doner truck the trans came out of with slight trimming. im running an early 90s truck radiator for oil and trans cooler ports and will prolly add a heavy duty cooler later on. the tricky part was figuring out how get my factory mechanical speedo to work ( dash is staying factory and all gages will operate ) from the electronic trans, after a little research I found a converions box made by adott that will be soon mounted under the dash..
while the headers where off and out, I wrapped coated them.. have 2 1/2 in collectors, pipe and nice new set of magnaflow to put on..

she close to moving under she own power again, will post pic once a have a little more time..

ok to bring everyone up to speed, here is my 1986 1 ton 4 door duelly with 148k original miles

They old big block was tired so I ended up finding a TBI big block at a reseonalable deal, complete with wiring harness. later picked up a 4L80e which I had both gone through and freshened up, had the trans built for towing..

Once the motor was out, we found a few things that needed attention before that monster trans would fit.

nice rot holes, then

poof, be gone!  I couldn't just paint the fire wall, so

the whole engine bay got redone.
on to the inside, after removing the carpet and 2 layer of tin I was rolling flintstone style!

the passenger side wasn't as bad

Both Sides had support damage so it was all rebuilt, raised the cab up over an inch (that was desperately needed to clear the 4l80)

After all that prep work had been completed it was time the new big block for its home.

after several hours perhaps days, all the front end is on.

I figured I would try Magnaflows on this build, see how they sound.

Ive got all 2 1/2 pipe to run off my nicely wrapped headders

just waiting on a few last things and she will be rolling again and I cant wait!
Will update and add more pics as I finish her up

A bit of an update: ran into a little issue tuning it in.. Ended up replacing TPS, IAK and dis, still had a stumble issues and cpu relearning issue..  after a bit of reseach and testing finding only 20 psi of fuel pressure that 94-95 BBC 454 out of vehicals greater then 8600 gvwr require 26-34 ( or something close ). so I had to drop the tank and put the bigger badder ( by 2 1/2 times ) fuel pump and all problems solved!!  this thing is a torque monster, shouldn't have any problems pulling 11000 lbs!

Made a little more progress, new tires all the way around, new u joints through the rest of the drive shaft.. Started replacing wore out front end parts, tie rods, and new shocks..  Drives a lot better, cant wait to hook the trailer up with the mutt on it and see how she pulls..
