Anyone modify their tow hooks on the front of their chevy...please post pics.

I would like to come up with a way to mount a clevis where my tow hooks are now but keep a stock appearance...I would to keep the rubber/plastic thing under the bumper.

Eroq

Hmm, idunno about your burban, but the 90s chevys were cast tow hooks.. brittle..

the CUCV uses a piece of square tube. you should be able to drill holes in it and bolt it in place of the chevy hooks.

I can get you dims on the tube and sidewall thickness if you want. PM me

YW  that is how it is done on the 1986 era chevy. I think you can bolt it vertically into the current hook bolt holes

Yeah it looks like I can fab up a couple of steel plates to sandwich the frame and have it stick out far enough to attach a clevis.

I need to get to my friends shop and break out the plasma cutter, he has all the steel stock I need. If all goes well maybe I will make some kits and sell them.

I Love those CUCV 1 ton military chevys.............came close to buying  one of those front bumpers......they are pretty neat looking, they were used on the CUCV military K5 blazers also.

I wonder if you can just buy the CUCV tow ring parts and then cut the holes in your bumper? That would save alot of time in fab work! If anyone has a link or knows where to get the parts please post! Check out this guys CUCV suburban he converted it himself http://www.cucv.net/suburban/cucv.html  ==rocks

I was just on there...they have a pair of the tow hooks but none of the hardware. I am wondering how strong that setup is anyway? I think I am just going to stick with my original plan and fab up some brackets that stick through the bumper and use screw type clevis. I will bolt the brackets to frame with two 1/2 grade 8 bolts and then arc weld them to the frame as well. I am thinking two 1/4 thick flat stock steel and sandwich the frame sticking out through the bumper. I dont know how thick the frame is but say if that is 1/4 steel as well I will weld flat stock inbetween the two giving me 3/4 thick mounts...I will then drill a 15/16" hole and use a clevis with a 7/8" screw pin. I am also thinking about reinforcing the frame by running a 2x2 square stock inbetween frame rails right at the front just so it dont bend if I get pulled out at an angle or something. I am going to start this project next weekend and will keep ya updated.

the blazers don't have D60's in them. I was very diappointed when I bought my first M1009 and went to pick it up and it did not have a D60 in it. I had done some research, but not enough.

Your right rizzo, my bad

and Disurban, as far as how strong the setup is.. I was a recovery specialist on the 1st generation of CUCV's in the military (early 80's) and trust me.. it's strong as hell....
