I have a 79 Bronco with a stock 460 that has a Holly 650 with vacume secondaries. I put 4.88 gears in it hoping that would help turn the 38" boggers I have on it.  My problem is that its a dog...  In high and low lock. The last bog I was at, the tach never got over 3500 no matter what I did. In turn, the secondaries didnt open up. Im ready to do some up grades to the motor so I dont look like a chump any more but I also dont want to break the bank.  Any idea's????

'79 460 with smogger heads was no killer even running good.   See what you can do to help your current situation but you will probably need to swap out your heads.

ok. thanks for the input.  and i aint puttin a chevy motor in it either!!  lol

Swampthing

find a 73 or older 429,or 460,they came with good heads..and ran very good.  they had what was called "dove" heads..they was actually cast as D3VE.  old lincolns with 429's would be a good choice.
82 scrambler ,blazer frame ,small block. It runs everything from 33's-44's....83 cj7.full size chevy axles..48 inch terra tires.. 83 cj7... purple. 350 chevy toyota axles,37 inch boggers..have fun and keep the rubber side down.. Swampy

460s are great engines.  Smogger heads just don't let them run as good as they could.

Mid to late 70s heads on the 460s were crap.  I remember my step dad's 77 Mercury Marquis had a 460 in it and it was a dog.

There are many variables like compression, ignition, exhaust restriction (plugged catalytic converter, etc).

Anybody that says that the mid to late 70s heads make just as much power as any other head are living in a dream world.  A mid to late 70s 460 can be made to run good (I think they were rated around 180 hp), but I wouldn't take it to the truck pull.  But then again, what do I know.  I've only got 27 years of experience and a Master Mechanic's certification.

I remember wrenching on these vehicles (as in all domestic) back in the very early 80s.  The quality was horrific, the performance was non-existant, and the vehicles ran poorly from day one.  I remember the auto industry was in very rough shape at the time and the EPA was ramming emissions requirments down the throats of the manufacturers faster than the technology could keep up.  Add this to the fact that this was the hay-day for Unions getting anything they demanded from the manufacturers (can you say $22.00/hr unskilled line works in the late 70's).  The quality and performance of the vehicles back then was just awful.
My keyboard can go through more stuff than your keyboard.

Yeah, might want to look for older heads, i gotta look for older heads for my 455, its a 75' has the lowest compression out of any of the 455's. Lotta polution issues in the 70's they used lower compression to somehow lower the amount of gasses coming out of the exhaust.
