GRRR...

So I'm driving down the road today. 1 mile trip to the field we're plowing. All of a sudden battery voltage drops and smoke starts POURING out from under the dash. WTF!!! Shut off truck and coast the last 1/4 mile into the field enterance. Open hood, look under dash, NO burned wires. ??? Try starting the truck back up, cranks over slow. Try one more time and now the starter is spinning but not engaging. So I'm reaching back to check the wires behind the motor and get a good whiff of the alternator. PEW, burnt up. Bearing siezed and wiped it out. ==np Off to Autozone we go to drop $90 on a new alternator. Get back, throw it in, hit the key, ZING! Starter spins but does not engage. CRAP! Pull truck, starts fine, runs fine. Shut it off to HOPE that the starter was just stuck, nada. Pull it again, get it back to the house, shut ot off. For grins, hit it. ZOOM starts right up! ==cl Get it hooked to the trailer to pick up the hay we baled on the ground works great. Out back picking up bales and the truck stalls (no mechanical failure, just hard for the wife to find creeper in a worn out tranny). Go to start it back up, ZING! No engage. p00 Now what. So, pull start it again and just don't shut it off the rest of the day.

Any ideas from former 454 owners?

Gonna do the starter this morning. Luckily I can get one at Autozone for $34. Guess it could be worse.

Well, the good news is, the starter was fine but one of the bolts fell out so it was swinging away from the block. Problem solved. Pulled the Super Swampers off the back and went to some 245/75R16 Michelins and swapped off the rusty beat up bed for a flatbed. Thanks Al. If anybody wants the bed for scrap or whatever let me know. It's beat up from being flipped off with the skidsteer but your welcome to it. No tailgate or taillights.

hell the flatbed works better for you in farming than a box does, and also cool flatbed.

Heck yeah. Bumps my hay hauling capacity from 41 to ~75. Gotta make some modifications, add a tie down rail to the outside and a rear extension of 1 foot, then she'll be fully ready to roll!

I thought about that, but I don't know if they'd pull through eventually. I think I'm gonna take some angle iron (3 or 4 inch) and bolt it to the edge like a gaurd rail then weld some hevy winch points to it. I need three on each side to line up with each section of hay stack. But, I also need it to be a foot longer so that the bulk of the last stack stays supported. I'm gonna work on something I can pin in place (like an extension braced by a couple 4x4's) that I can remove when I pull a trailer so the bed doesn't hit the stock trailer.

well if you do somthing like that be sure to somthing under the edge of the bed  so that way the bolt does not pull through and if you go that way get small d rings.

Got started painting today. Sprayed the rims with some aluminum paint and started the first white coat on the flatbed. Rims look alot better than they did. The white should keep the flatbed cooler when I use it as a partydeck at the bogs. Eventually the cab will be red and the bumpers and frame painted black but I figure it's a good start.
