Truck: 1993 Ford Ranger
Engine: 3.0 V6 STOCK auto trans
Problem: Started out as intermittent no start, and finally it didn't start one morning a few weeks ago.

Well I narrowed it down finally. We WERE getting no spark at the coil. I bought an ignition module today and VOILA, spark at the coil but nothing to the plugs. But here's what I think it might be. Right after it broke down I bought a new rotor button because the old one had broken apart inside the cap. So I don't know what caused what but I think that's what caused the IGN. Mod. to go bad. Now I did NOT get a new cap, just new rotor button. But there are shavings in the distributor. The cap is a little scratched inside of it but doesn't look really burnt just in a few very small spots but not burnt just a faintly darker tint. So do you guys think that it's just a new cap I should get or maybe a whole new distributor? OR THE KICKER. What about the pickup coil inside the dizzy?

Thanks ++peace

Not until 1996 or 97. And I replaced the cap and the rotor was already replaced a week or two before. I'm not getting spark at the plugs now. Basically it's intermittent, no spark for 5 cranks. Then it sparks once or twice one crank 6 and then again after a few. So definitely the dizzy gear. Thanks. Will post once I pick one up in a week or two.

have you pulled the cap off and watched the rotor spin while cranking to know for sure it is the dist. gear?

No, but nothing else should cause to be sparratic like that should it? Within 5000 miles, plugs and wires, and just recently it's got a new ign coil, ign module, and cap and rotor. There are shavings inside the dizzy, which leads me to believe the gears been worn.

would make the most sense, yes. but other weird stuff happens like a loose wire making contact every so often, i was just stating its good to actually see before going and buying a new part =)

ah. Well I had the same thing in an s10 but everything else broke before the dizzy gear. It exhibited the same symptoms which is the reason I believe it to be the dizzy. My mother is ordering one in a day or two since no one local has one with the module in it......

Hitman89x

could you not have just got the dist. gear itself?

Don't have the tools to remove the gear......and I was VERY unsuccessful trying to do it on the s10's dizzy. And the gear isn't much cheaper than a dizzy I'm sure.

gear is like 5-10 $ dist. is like 50? for a cheapo.. or reman + core charge all it is i thought was a push pin that holds it on...

You have to get the gear pressed off.......

Hitman89x

correct tbut there is a pin also... and getting it off is easy smack it a few times after you get the pin out.. but seeing as you already ordered a dizzy this is no problem..

well she didn't yet. Supposed to today. Can you suggest a way to get to the dizzy's bolt? I can't get any leverage on it to turn the hold down bolt.

im not sure where its located on the 3.0 but on my 2.9 the dizzy is in the back and just climbed on top of the engine and grabbed my 1/2 inch wrench i used the circle end of the wrench though not the open end was easier to turn it a little at time that way..
