i always soak new lifters in a cofee can of oil overnight to burp the air out of them ahead of time. had the same thing happen to one of my first motors. put the cam and lifters in with just the assembly lube. got back to it about a month later and made it run. sounded just like you describe

wound up swappin lifters out with ones i soaked overnight and it went away. gave it like 10 mins of run time, lashin and re lashin the valves adn couldnt get the clatter out of it. didnt wanna junk the cam so we swapped em out adn it went away. was the only thing we could think of was that the lifters wouldnt prime on there own.

have soaked every set since and never had the problem on any other motor

Soakin the lifters just makes them oily. It does not purge the air. Hold the lifter in oil that completely covers it and use a pushrod to pump it up right before you install it. The distributor should be the last thing you install on the motor right before you try to start it. Make an old oil pump drive rod into a thing you put on your drill and spin that oil pump till you see oil comin out the top of the pushrods. Thats how you prime the oil system, and you eliminate alotta bull p00 and damage if youll do it this way. If you cant get oil to the top of the motor, you better be findin out why.  ;D

The reason it says dont soak cuz damage could result is beause people rely on merely soaking the lifters and thats not how ya pump them up. The damage that results is over-tight valves, bent valves, broke valves, and lots more!

i havnt had a problem soaking them. probly about 20 engines. on the higher dollar ones we do prime them with a drill though also,
the biggest valve train problems ive seen on new engines is people that blindly "cold lash" the valves and then try to break the cam
in....

old school truck dude

Back "in the day" I built literally a couple thousand motors in the machine shop. Mostly small block chevys, lots of ford small blocks, and some mopars along with some of the rest. Best to use the drill. Its like drinkin and drivin, you might can get away with it for a while, but it will catch up to ya and then it will be very expensive.. ;D
