heres a formula for you. old tire size divided by new tire size x current gear ratio will give you the new desirable ratio to match your tires. i used this when i did up my bronco. i over geared a little because im gonna switch to 37s. but the 4.88 gears with 35s make my lil 302 seem much larger

That didn't work for me.
Current tire. 40"
Old tire: 35"
Current gear ratio: 3.73

it comes out to a 4.26 ratio so if you want to go for performance go with 4.56 gears a lil less power more mileage go with 4.11s . 40 divided by 35 x 3.73 = 4.26 < this ratio would get you back to stock performance with 40in tires

HellYeah4x4

with my bronco i wanted 37s. so 37<new tire / 31 <old tire x 3.55 ratio gave me 4.23 ratio so i went 4.88s to get a lil more performance since its mainly a trail/bog  truck

what type of tires are the 40s? it plays apart on what gears to use. for playing in the mud, not on the road as much. (boggers, tsl, ground hogs)  a friend had chevy with mild 454,350trans,208, 410gears, 40 boggers on all 4. and then he thought the truck would do better with 456 gears, but the truck was slower. not enough wheels speed with 456.

I got like 850 hp. Th 400 trans. 208 case. 40" hawgs

Jthomas you are thanking the wrong way. if your motor is that much, you need spin the tires faster not rpm. that kind of power use less gears like 373 or 410.

I'm not looking to race it or spin the tires that fast. I want torque for trails and what not.

850 hp for trails I think may be over kill but I still bet 4.10s would work fine with that much power! a true 850hp is ALOT of power.. with ground hawgs you may end up in hi range!

this post needs to be delete.  to much crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that dose not make sence. ( dose not matter what brand you are talking about gas in and exhaust that makes power) you start with 10 bolt front end. then 850hp motor in Daily drive.   Just my 2 cents!!!!

Power and use are completly relevant in choosing the correct gear ratio.
