serpintine belt setup or old school

putting my healthy small block in my dually and debating on keeping it old school belt setup or putting the serpintine belt setup on it. they both have pros and cons but it just seems simpler to keep it old school. and if the power steering takes a crap it will be easier to change and the old school alternators are cheaper.   What would you guys run if it was you?

No way frank, serpentine is the way to go. I have yet to sling a serpentine belt or have any kind of problem.

Serp... and you can get a serp although for same price as vbelt. No slipping no squealing. No thrown belts with serp. Very rare to throw or break one. Only Don side to serp is if the belt does go you loose everything

SERP WONT THROW OFF WHEN IN HIGH RPM'S

ProGrade

Serp won't throw and also takes less tension to keep it from slipping, less tension means less wear which means bearings last longer

v belts
thats my preferance  the last time i put a alt on my dd 94 truck  it was twice as much $$ than a old style single wire   my buick scroad  master ate belts and there was no way too shim  anything out   just my 2 cents  if ya doo run a serp setup from somethin else make shure you write down somewhere  under the hood what it came off  for referance of replacement  parts down the road

serp all the way.
soo thats what everyones running ???  i havent ever had any trouble with v belts  but on the other hand ive changed countless tensioners

Bryank

awh geese, unamious decision serpintine wins for now. as long as the brackets line up with the dart pro series heads. seeing how they are angled i dont know if it will matter.

i agree with you bigfrank way less problems and everything is cheaper without all the bs. plus probably more hp old school.

I would say serp would produce more HP, one belt with flatter contact patch, and self adjusting, so you know you have proper tension on all pulleys, compared to v belt with multiple belts with deep contact, and being pulled from every direction with uneven tension on each separate belt... But just my 2 cents

Big frank...I'm guessing your scroad master had a ps pump changed and someone cranked the pulley on too far, that's the only time I have shredded a serp belt

That has to do with amperage output more so than the application year.

V belt

I have a 653 big block Merlin. 1,000hp-1,000ft lbs. it hits like 6800. Never tossed a belt

I have a drag boat 454 8-71 supercharged. 1,000hp, v belts 7,500 rpm

Another drag boat 482 16-71, 2,500hp we run on the lake with an alternator, vbelt @ 7,800rpm

Never had a problem with any of them slipping off.

My truck is soon to have v belts, I'm sure they will be fine too. And plus, if I do loose a belt, at least I don't loose everything.

But, we only drag race. In the mud, there always a different load, constant rpm change, and just the roughness of the ride. As to drag racing, the only huge load is off the line, then after that it's just top end, and realistically it's for a few seconds. As to bogging were you in the pit god only knows how long. So I'm sure that also determines the life of the belt, and how prone they are to popping off.

But just MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH V BELTS, never had an issue.
