Just picked up an 88 Chevy 3500 with a 454 in it. Got it no more then 5 miles and it died. Pretty new to big blocks but basically what happened is that the front main seal is slightly leaking and while driving the oil got hot enough, and built up enough pressure to blow the oil cap right off. I let the truck sit for a few hours and now it wont start at all. Almost sounds like the starters grinding on the flywheel when it trys to turn over. What could be wrong?

Sounds like you were getting a lot of blow by pass the rings and it built pressure up that way and blew the cap off and prolly what blew the front seal, as for the grinding starter idk...

Was it burning any oil? That's another way to tell if rings are bad...
Also does it crank over still?

Lemon :(

Sounds like it blew

x2 if it was burning oil bad its hurt

X3 if its not turning over sounds like you seized it.....prolly ran out of oil......and if you do rings, you have to tear it all the way down and at that point you might as well do a full rebuild

Don't try starting it again, it might be rebuildable. Don't put a hole in the side of it.
