Title: true or false ???
Post by: mudslayer2008 on February 10, 2009, 06:29:07 AM
I was told buy a guy I work with that the 400 turbo I have will shift from 1st to 2nd even if you drop the linkage manuly. He said it will shift on it's own to 2nd no matter what you do unless you change the valve body.  I myself have a hard time beleaving this because if you put it in 1st gear manuly it should stay in that gear until you change to the next gear correct ?
Was wondering who runs or has run or has any opinions or facts about this transmission.

I've had 2 chevy vans 86 and 88 and both them would shift on there own from 1st to 2nd. And leave black marks, feels like a shift kit in it when it shifts on it's own

they all should shift. if they are stock, however you can get transpaks for them that will make them not shift if you put them in first

All stock TH400's will "panic" shift from 1st to 2nd. The only way it won't is if the valve body has been changed or modified.

a trany shop should be able to get you the parts,  and  you should be able to leave in the truck to change.   take bottom pan off and its  above your  filter.   some  auto parts stores can get  them.

yep  it'll panic shift... my 4.3 sblazer does it dam near everyday... hate it loll then doesnt drop back into first for bout 10 seconds with my foot back off the pedal. Manual valve body would take care of that.. i dont think a shift kit would... maybe?

Gearz you can by them through Summit or Jegs you can also get them to change the order of the way they shift.  Reverse Valve Body.  Which means that the first forward gear would be 1st instead of drive.  Dont know how hard they are to put in.  I had a Jeep that already had the reverse valve body in it.

I run 400 turbo with a manual body.

I love it, what gear I want, is what gear I have.

Just remember, you put it in 3rd (drive) at take off,  you are in that gear.

I dont have a manual valve body and I swear to god on my grand mothers grave it will hold first all day long...it also has a real strong shift will chirp the tires from first to second. Must have a shift kit but would a shift kit hold first gear like that? I know my trans was rebuilt about 50k ago and the guy used my burban for towing he also had a big ass tranny cooler installed, my fluid is nice and pink and smells brand new. So I was just wondering if there was shift kits designed for towing that would allow you to hold first? Maybe that would explain mine? Or could something be wrong with my trans?

True...plus a TBI smog motor runs out of steam at about 4500rpm.

Install a chevy 302 and wind it up to about 7500 rpm and let us know what the results are ==roll Better yet make a video and post it on youtube...make sure it is in 4 wheel drive when ya do it ==roll

I am actually thinking about putting a ripe 327 in mine and running a 454tbi. I can get a rebuilt 350hp 327 right now 0 miles for $1500!
