Ok vehicle 1994 cherokee sport 4.0 auto
Problem over heats... when it sits for say longer than 10 minutes idling
Parts replaced
Thremostat
Radiator
Radiator cap
Coolant flush with flush stuff from autozone..
Water pump looks like brand new when i pulled it off to replace it..
Radiator fan kicks in just fine...
HELPPP!!!
with the cap off and it running can you see the water moving like its getting circulated right
The cap is at an area where you cant see the coolant .
Water pump might not be circulating the coolant.
Depending on how much it costs, how easy it is to get to and how many miles are on the motor it might be worth swapping the water pump anyway. ???
did you try a lower temp thermostat like a 180 degree... the water pump might be weak too.
water pump isnt that much. its kinda difficult to change but could be the problem.
Is it electric fan or belt driven? If it's belt and the shroud is missing it won't draw the air through the radiator. Just around the front.
they have both fans.
Im doing the water pump right now.. The old one looks brand new and theres blue silicone under it so its been done sometime or another.. We will see.. Hopefully this does the trick.. whats the possibility of the head gasket? There is no oil in my coolant and no coolant in my oil....
I might try the lower temp thermostat also.. i like that idea
so i have had this problem and this is a big problem. i chased mine around for a long time. after doing the same thing and replaceing every coolant thing i could i come to the point where i had my jeep pressure tested and came to find out my head was cracked. typical jeep. put a new head on and if it fixed the problem. but its possiible your water pump isnt doing the job so. thats just my two pennies
Your thermostat will either work or not. Dont waste your time with a different temp if you know the thermostat is opening up.
If the new water pump doesnt take care of the problem... ugh, I think it is going to get expensive.
It could also be the radiator...just because you ran flush through it does not mean it's clean and flowing. Once those tubes get clogged up you can run 100 bottles of flush through it and it wont unclog them, the flush will just flow through the few tubes that are not clogged!

this post started after i put a brand new radiator in

In that case I would suspect a bad head gasket or cracked head...you can try replacing the water pump however I have never seen one go bad without leaking or making a horrible noise.
A cooling system is real real simple. You need flow (WATER PUMP) you need a heat exchanger (RADIATOR) and you need air to cool the radiator (FAN or WIND FROM Driving) a thermostat simply allows the motor to reach operating temp faster and during cold weather. If a thermostat is stuck shut it will cause you to over heat but most thermostats now days are fail safe and will fail in the open position.
are both fans working?
yes both fans are working.. I havent had the chance to test it since the water pump its been sitting in pieces from my suspension build ill keep this up to date..
when you get a chance find someone with a colling system pressure tester, try that, if you dont have it figured out by the next time im going downstate (prolly easter weekend) i can bring mine over.
i think i know someone with one.. Good idea Thanks
freinds jeep did the same thing it was a bad head gasket. was alright if u were driving it but let it set it would sometimes peg the temp gauge. head gasket finnaly blew out completely after awhile
you wont get oil in your rad or block if it is cracked next to the exhaust port..just use some water and bubble in the rad when it is running...fill the rad or holding tank to the top, if you keep getting bubbles from rad...you have problems!!!!

if you use the pressure tester, put it up to the pressure that it says on the radator cap, and it doesnt hold it very long, you either got a cracked head, a bad gasket, or something, your loosing pressure somewhere. If it holds just fine on a cold engine, warm it up with the cap off the radiator and test it agian, see if it leaks with the engine warm.
Test the cap too while your at it, make sure it lets the pressure off at the right PSI. Somewhere in those tests you should find the problem.

Still have not put water in it to figure it out. But someone might have figured it for me.. They said my clutch driven fan was to loose and it spun to freely.. It almost spins just like the electric fan when its all shut off and you spin it by hand..
Sound right?
i dont know how to test those fans, other than to stick one on thats known to be good, and see if it fixes it. I have a thermal clutch (whatever they call it) on my s10, when its cold it spins easy too..
i was told that when its just sitting there it should not spin just freely. It should spin but should have a good bit of resistance when you try and spin it.. There is almost none

That is correct...I just checked mine and there is quite a bit of resistance. The clutch is probably shot in yours and that will cause it to over heat when the vehicle is not moving. Does it stay cool when you are driving it down the freeway?
Yes moving it stays cool but leave it sit for 5 minutes and the temp creeps up

Yep replace the fan...this is not the first time I heard of this problem. I have never had one go bad on me but I have heard of other people that have. You don't have to use a clutch type fan either you can replace it with a direct drive if you want just as long as it bolts up to your water pump and clears belts, hoses, shroud, that will probably be a cheaper option.
Or go with an electric fan.
Being that i have a winch i think id be better of with the motor driven one.. Electric fan would probably eat up to much electricity for my stock alternator at this time..
maybe mines shot too.. spins pretty freely.. give it a good spin and it goes around 7 or 8 times.. but my 4 cyl hardly ever hits 140 degrees anyways..
