I am building a new toy. It is not four wheel drive. You will pee yourself when you see it. Pics soon.
so what are you gonna do take a smart car and put it up on a lifted 2wd frame loll
is it an out house? lol
I think it'll be a moped, on TRACTOR TIRES!!! Like the old shool ROKON.
Nah.. he's puttin the new barn on 166" tractor tires !!
what is it???????? when you goin to post pics!!!????
is it a back ho lifted with some tractors
come on you cant just tease us like this..
u give us a snack but we want the whole damn dinner!!!
Is it a front loader slammed on some 24" rims with low pro's???
LMAO ITs an old school Snapper lawn tractor on 40" boggers
Wait a minute............I know exactly what it is...............
It's an ECONO-BOX FROM HELL!!!!!!!!
OK, here's the plan. I'm taking a 1972 Honda AZ600 coupe and making it into a street/strip retardo toy. The car currently has a 600 cc TWO cylinder motor which I will be replacing with a gm 5700 cc unit. Car will have a narrowed 9 inch ford rear end and will be tubbed. I expect to the to weigh about 1800-2000 pounds when I'm done.

No, just really bad bodywork.

very cool project
gives a new meaning to rice burner.....lol
that will be one sweet ride ==kp
The car was not on fire IT IS JUST THAT DAM HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I started gutting the car today. I found lots of room for a V8.
Are ya going to keep it stealth as possible? I would! Keep it ride height with slicks tucked up nice and neat and a super quiet exhaust. Build the ultimate sleeper kinda like the civette http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2Mc8VQ_IkM&NR=1
OMG that is freaking sweet. I have always wanted to do that to a civic and get it al light as i could with a lot of motor.

Whoever built that has mad fab skills (and a fat wallet). The car is MUCH smaller than a Civic so it's going to be pretty hard to keep it stock looking and still have a V8 in it. This car is so small it may only seat one when I'm done. It makes a Geo Metro look huge.
are you sure it going to fit in your huge pole barn, ==roll
jkk
dose it run the 600 cc
?
If I pull this project off and start to bracket race this thing, I am going to name it "Nuckin' Futz"

ANY UPDATES???
I have aquired a Ford 9" rear, Powerglide tranny, pinto front suspension, and a retired IMCA chassis that will donate sections of it's roll cage to the Honda. I will be shortening the Powerglide so I can make a driveshaft fit.
I'm hoping to get the materials for the frame in the near future. I need to get some of my side work caught up in my shop before I can dive back into this project.
i got parts for a SBC that will make that thing pull wheelies in 2nd :)
==roll
Instead of a V8 I think a 3.8 turbo would really rock in that little car. It would fit a lot better, be lighter and you could relocate the turbo to the rear of the car like the STS Turbo kits along with the battery for a little more weight in the rear and less in the front.
Badass Dave!! fun to drive for sure

I'm back to working on the Honda. I can't do much due to budget issues (layed off) but I'm doing as much as I can with the parts I have.
I have the interior stripped and I started making room for the V8. I have a Pinto front suspension I will be narrowing and I Ford 9 inch that I will also be cut down. If I can spare a few bucks thing week I will be buying the material for the frame.

I did take some time to narrow the front suspension. I narrowed it from 61 inches down to 44 inches. Here is a photo of the mock up. The engine will sit behind the front wheels so don't panic that its so narrow.

Looks like crap, you should give it to me immediately. Have you thought of Mazda rotary power? Light weight engine that will free rev to over 10k RPM's, and can be dual turbo'ed. That, or a Subaru WSX engine either N/A, or turbocharged. Tons of wheelstanding power. I have an Opel Kadett front suspension, lighter and more of a tidy package for the front of that rig. It has a transverse mounted leaf spring below the xmember, and the front end components are lighter. Rack and pinion steering, but I don't remember the track width. Its not wide though. Its design would allow you to set an engine between the control arms, and out of the passenger compartment. I also have a 2wd TH180 that will bolt up to any 60 degree chevrolet block, so you could run a 2.4, a 2.8 V6, a 3.1 V6, a 3.4 V6 or a 4.3. Also will take a supercharged 3800, or even a cadillac 4.9 V8. Lemme know where in Bay city to come inspect the turd.

After your post I did some research on that front end. I don't think it will work because of the width. The Pinto suspension is narrowed to 44 inches so it fits in the wheel wells with a "comfort zone". The nice thing about the Pinto front is parts availablity and realitivly large disk brakes.
I did send a PM. I'd like to check out the Opel front if your selling just to see if it might work better for the project.
I worked with a guy that had a datsun 240z with a 440 mopar motor with a blower. Car ran low 9's around 150 mph. Talk about wheel stand. Little car + big motor = Bad Ass.

You are nuts.
I can't wait to see this car come together.
With the exception of fabbing up steering, the front suspension is pretty much done. It took forever to get two stub rails situated so they were square, same length, notched for clearance, blah blah blah.

The frame rails sticking out from the suspension are just stub ends. I left enough material there to make my life easier when I attach the front suspension to the main frame. I'm also going to have support for the body coming off the front of the suspsion.

Just prepped axle shafts so they can be sent to Moser. Removing 17 3/4 inches off one and 11 3/4 inches off the other. Axle width is 29" at backing plates and I decided to go with a centered pinion so I could have a straight driveshaft.
I didn't feel like working on the steering so I decided to start putting the rear axle together.
This first picture is where I was truing up the tubes before tack welding. I tweaked the tubes until I got the wheels parallel.
Tires back on rims and checking for clearance on frame rails. I must say, I'm really happy that everything is going together without a bunch of measurement screw ups.
Just a shot from the back. I was having trouble with porosity while I was welding even though I cleaned the inside of the housing. I stopped welding and I'm going to take another shot at cleaning all the residual gear lube from the insides of the tube. I stripped the axle down to the bare housing last night and will finish my welding on the stripped housing after it gets a good douching.

There will be several inches on each side. I'm not 100% sure of the tire size other than they are 15s. I believe they are a 60 series but the tires you see will only be used for mock up due to dry rot. I had to make a compromise with the frame width because that is where I will be sitting due to the engine being in the passenger compartment of the car.
this is one of those situations when you better take video of the first run, because it might be the last!

I've been working on my house alot instead of the car.
I had some problems with porosity when I started to weld up the tubes on the rear end. I regrouped and cleaned the living dog snot ouf of the housing using oven cleaner and a steam jenny. The next attemp at welding the tubes turned out nice. Today I was piddle farting around with the 4 link brackets that will be welded to the axle housing. I had to drill out all the holes to 5/8 and I will have to grind them to fit the axle housing.
I don't forsee me spending alot of time on the car until about the middle of next week. I am remodeling my second story (gutted to bare walls right now) and I need to spend time on that project to shut my wife up.....er, I mean make my wife happy.

I will be sitting in the center of the car just forward of the rear axle. Foot controls will be on each side of the motor.
This thing is so sweet! Amazing you are stuffing so much into that car body. ;D
I was putzing with the Honda frame tonight. I welded up the forward 4-link brackets and cut the tubes for the 4 link. I need to get a new tool post for my lathe so I can make the threaded inserts for the tubes.
W O W !!!!! awesome
I was working on the four link stuff yesterday. To save a few bucks I am making the link rods out of solid stock (that I had laying around) instead of buying the weld in theaded ends.
Having some fun with the lathe. My 19/32 drill bit made the holes too a bit too large for the tap (even though the chart says it shouldn't). I started out by drilling a 9/16 hole.
After drilling I bored the hole to 0.590 and got excellent results when tapped.
A word of caution: Don't buy el cheapo taps off ebay. I had some problems with the taps being on the soft side (rounded off some of the cutting threads). I got around the problem by drilling the holes extra deep to utilize the good threads near the top of the tap. I found some quality taps at Prime Fastener in Midland for about the same money as I bought the crap taps. The 5/8-18 LH tap is on the pricey side compared to the RH tap. Fastenall wanted $87 for a LH tap, Prime wanted $24. Sorry but almost 90 bucks for a tap is just retarded.
I put the remaining 4 link rods on today. I'm having so issues with articulation. It will not articulate much more than an inch on each side but it goes up and down great.
I decided to put the axle together (temporarily) and hang the tires on all 4 corners. It is now officially a rolling chassis. I still have to fab up a panhard rod and make the mounts for my coilover shocks.
Just a shot of the uber narrow 9 in. rear end. I just have the frame sitting on a piece of angle iron for now.

That is going to be one bad ass go-cart.

Correct. The car is too narrow to put the engine up front and still have some suspension. Since my goal was not to use wheel flares to cover the tires, I opted to put the motor behinde the front axle.

That is nuts you either have some big brass balls or a death wish. LOL looks like it will be fun though. good luck and make your roll cage really strong.
This car is little more than an odd sounding smoke generator.
LOL! I'm pretty sure this is the same type of car that Hightower from the movie "Police Academy" learned to drive in.
He also had to sit in the back seat.
gonna want ta pay particular attention to the exhaust system too..
dumpin out on either side of the steerin wheel may not be your best option..
considering your carb is gonna suck every last molecule of 02 outta the cab.
hey would it have been easier to extend the front end and fab up some longer fenders so the motor could sit farther forward, and in the center of the car, you know kind of like a funny car, then it would give you alot more room in the car for the seat. and some safety stuff so you dont lose a leg or foot or worse. just a ? going to be cool though when its done, just be safe first.
i think he wants the look of stock ???

The engine will be in a doghouse like a van so intake air will come from under the hood. Exhaust will dump just in front of rear tires.

My goal is to do this without modifying the exterior sheet metal. I march to my own drummer when it comes to building stuff.
well what ever kind of drum it let it rock

Just had a mental image of 3 1/2" collectors on either side of your head (at full throttle mind you) blowin yer face into a crooked smile.. while the door panels take the shape of the headers! kinda the RatFink thing..

My secret weapon for building a mid engine car with an 87 inch wheelbase. I bring you....the Shorty Glide!

This is just a mock up using the shorty rear cover. I have all the guts to make this unit a true shorty glide.
With the addition of one more heim joint, the steering will be done. I've plated all the open tube ends on the main frame so now there is only one thing left to do.......
Stuff the frame into the body

I will be hacking the floor out of the Honda in a few days. I have to take some time off to stuff a trans in a Jetta.
is it me or is the engine where u should be sitting? lol u gonna be a back seat driver now lol.

I couldn't put the engine up front because the car is too narrow. I will be sitting in the center between the rear frame rails. Yes, it will be a very tight fit.
yeah i want to see you get in that thing lol

That is a bad ass go cart. Plan on putting a roll cage in it??

Yes
Awsome.
After busting my ass yesterday, I got the body sitting on the frame. I have a schit ton of sheet metal work to do as this little turd car was very rusty. Pictures will follow.

"They don't call me Econo-box from Hell for nothing".
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!!! YOUR CREATION IS GOING TO BE CRAZY FUN. JUST MAKE IT SAFE FOR YOU TO DRIVE :) PLATE STEEL UNDER THE BOYS FOR SURE LOL I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YA DRIVE IT. GOOD LUCK!
Ok, I have entered the next phase of this project: Rust.
I have alot of work to do to make this car structurally sound let alone look good. These cars were cheap pieces of p00 back in their day so it's a miracle I have anything left of the car to put in my shop. I have some rust in hard to reach areas but on the positive side, the car is solid in critical areas like the door supports and the windshield pillars. even the bottoms of the doors look good.
I have to rebuild the rocker panels on both sides. I'm striking out for replacements so I may have to find something close and make it work.

I took the fenders off so I could repair the inner fender and supports. Baaaad rust in this area. It doesn't look like it on the outside but the inner area is toasted. I will be buying at least one fender, I may be able to salvage the other one.
Right side inner fender; rusted inside and out. I plan on cutting out all of the original wheel wells and just leaving it open. I will be cutting out all of the rust on the inner fender support and re-enforcing it so it does not flex. I will also be building supports on the front of the fram to support the front area of the fenders and it will also act as a support for the radiator.
Somebody was bugging me for engine pictures. This is the first motor I'm going to use. Its a good running 350 TBI that I'm just going to cam up and carb for now. I have another motor that I'd like to build and turbo but that will have to wait until I find steady employment. Note: I'm aware that the body is not centered on the frame. I just have everything held in place temporarily while I fix the rust, once the rot is gone and I have some good sheet metal to work with, I will be building the permanent body mounts.

And lastly, my poor little weiner dog after it was attacked by my daughters. They put a pink blanky and a Dora pillow near the pooch while it was sleeping.

holy p00 dave.......your gonna want the biggest swaybar you can get on the front of that thing with your pivots that close together.
but i have an original name for it...ROLLYPOLY..duno if i spelled that right but those little bugs that roll up into a ball when you touch them? LOLOLOL thats awesome
seriously though if ya loose the upper a arms and replace them with coilover struts you could mount them out far enough to put the engine where mother nature intended
that thing reminds me of those models from 70s they were all motor very cartoonish . yea your name fits your build applaudd
cant wait to see final pics
This car may be usable by next summer.

No sway bar will be neede because the front is so stiff. The engine with headers will not fit between the front tires. I had to set the engine that far back otherwise it would have to be rear steer. The rear will be getting much wider tires. I set the rear end and frame up to accept 10" tires.
I am not building this to be a full on drag car. It's too short and narrow to be stable at high speed. I did put the mass of the engine and trans as low as I could to help with stability. The car is more of a novelty than anything. I only plan to hammer on it short distances and to make smoke appear from the rear tires. I may run it 1/8th mile if the car handles ok.
One last thing. I'm unemployed right now (again, ugh) so I have to build this car for next to nothing. I have a friend that owns a salvage yard and he pretty much gives me anything I need for the car. He donated the Pinto front suspension, wheels, and tires. He also has one of these cars that I may be able to rob some parts off of. There's not much left of the car he has but anything I can grab from it helps.
make sure the rear is spooled so it dont turn on ya when it yanks the front end off the ground and have fun....looks like a good time for sure ;D ++peace
Spool for sure when its done. I left the rear end open right now so I can push it around without killing myself.
wow this is crazy nuts cool as ==censor all in one 8) lookin forward to seeinn completed ++peace
looking good

My goal was never to make it a sleeper, I just didn't want to modify the exterior sheet metal. It looks like I'm going to have to modify the very rear of the quarter panel wheel opening if I want the 12" tires to work. When I'm done I want to car to look like a pro street AZ600 verses a Honda with giant wheel flares.
i think theres a good chance your gonna need a wheelie bar

No, it hasnt moved in a very long time. Not sure what happened, just see the car when I got through there and it hasnt moved an inch in about 10 months or so. Econobox hasnt been on here since November of last year or so, left town, maybe?
there was a old car in lansing not sure the make it was some strange name but it was set up like that guy sat in the backe seat and stradeled the motor n trans the gas was on one side of the motor n trans and the break was on the other was cool ...good luck look like it will be fun
