Title: "Brutus" Bye Bye...
Post by: TBigLug on June 03, 2009, 08:03:45 PM
1988 Chevy C3500

454
4 sp. Creeper
DANA 70 rear 3.73:1

Future plans: Flatbed, body work for front (DS door, rockers, cab corners, fenders, grille, gas tank), repaint, 19.5 wheels, and more. Someday I'll swap in an NV4500 5 sp. and rebuild the motor.

GRRR...

So I'm driving down the road today. 1 mile trip to the field we're plowing. All of a sudden battery voltage drops and smoke starts POURING out from under the dash. WTF!!! Shut off truck and coast the last 1/4 mile into the field enterance. Open hood, look under dash, NO burned wires. ??? Try starting the truck back up, cranks over slow. Try one more time and now the starter is spinning but not engaging. So I'm reaching back to check the wires behind the motor and get a good whiff of the alternator. PEW, burnt up. Bearing siezed and wiped it out. ==np Off to Autozone we go to drop $90 on a new alternator. Get back, throw it in, hit the key, ZING! Starter spins but does not engage. CRAP! Pull truck, starts fine, runs fine. Shut it off to HOPE that the starter was just stuck, nada. Pull it again, get it back to the house, shut ot off. For grins, hit it. ZOOM starts right up! ==cl Get it hooked to the trailer to pick up the hay we baled on the ground works great. Out back picking up bales and the truck stalls (no mechanical failure, just hard for the wife to find creeper in a worn out tranny). Go to start it back up, ZING! No engage. p00 Now what. So, pull start it again and just don't shut it off the rest of the day.

Any ideas from former 454 owners?

Gonna do the starter this morning. Luckily I can get one at Autozone for $34. Guess it could be worse.

Well, the good news is, the starter was fine but one of the bolts fell out so it was swinging away from the block. Problem solved. Pulled the Super Swampers off the back and went to some 245/75R16 Michelins and swapped off the rusty beat up bed for a flatbed. Thanks Al. If anybody wants the bed for scrap or whatever let me know. It's beat up from being flipped off with the skidsteer but your welcome to it. No tailgate or taillights.

hell the flatbed works better for you in farming than a box does, and also cool flatbed.

Heck yeah. Bumps my hay hauling capacity from 41 to ~75. Gotta make some modifications, add a tie down rail to the outside and a rear extension of 1 foot, then she'll be fully ready to roll!

just put in like 4 eye bolts somthing like this on both sides.

Post by: TBigLug on June 11, 2009, 11:29:04 PM
I thought about that, but I don't know if they'd pull through eventually. I think I'm gonna take some angle iron (3 or 4 inch) and bolt it to the edge like a gaurd rail then weld some hevy winch points to it. I need three on each side to line up with each section of hay stack. But, I also need it to be a foot longer so that the bulk of the last stack stays supported. I'm gonna work on something I can pin in place (like an extension braced by a couple 4x4's) that I can remove when I pull a trailer so the bed doesn't hit the stock trailer.

Post by: 390JOE on June 11, 2009, 11:35:12 PM
well if you do somthing like that be sure to somthing under the edge of the bed  so that way the bolt does not pull through and if you go that way get small d rings.

Got started painting today. Sprayed the rims with some aluminum paint and started the first white coat on the flatbed. Rims look alot better than they did. The white should keep the flatbed cooler when I use it as a partydeck at the bogs. Eventually the cab will be red and the bumpers and frame painted black but I figure it's a good start.

Got a hose clamp on the shifter pins so it tightened up the pattern ALOT. Picked up some 285/75R16's on UNBENT dually rims. Slapped them on the fron then had to swap inside for outside rims on the back so all outside rims would match. Looks pretty good and the truck is getting closer to sitting level but man I wish I had a good impact and compressor . Those 4 way turns are taking their toll! I'll still get the coil spacers for the front because I'm going to add to the spring pack in the rear to stiffen up the load carrying a little.

Title: Re: "Brutus" a productive weekend...
Post by: TBigLug on July 26, 2009, 12:12:03 AM
Well, it's been a pretty productive weekend so far. Got a CD player in the truck. Looks like hell but I've got tunes in a couple speakers now. Got the AC retrofitted and recharged and buddy does it blow cold air. The vent selector is not putting air to anything but the defroster. ??? Oh well, that'll be a Garage/ Tech area thread. Found an old (not so much old as it was just one that came out of a truck I bought) brake controller in the back of my toolbox. Got her wired up and it works great. Voila, we have trailer brakes. Picked up some bushings for the DS door so it should stop sagging just in time to get replaced. MILKTOST hooked me up with some shims to go between my wheels and the axle. Turns out all the shaking that had been going on was a product of Ford wheels on a Chevy. The center hole was larger on the wheels so these shims fill in the gap between the wheels and hub. Let me tell you, the old boy rides smooth as glass now!

That's about it so far. I'll be picking up fenders and other misc. parts this week so there should be some more work getting done ASAP.

Thanks man. I'm hoping to make some major headway on gathering up the body parts this week. I'll get as many of them sanded, bondo'd and primed before they go on the truck . Once I do the rockers and cab corners I'll paint the whole cab. Man, looks like a long road ahead for an old farm truck! loll

Title: Re: "Brutus" Take The Good With The Bad...
Post by: TBigLug on August 02, 2009, 11:34:45 PM
Well, today was one of those days you just had to kinda take the good with the bad.

Headed out this morning to pick up fuse box cover, headlight switch, glovebox door, seat belts and visors. Got home ready to tear into the old boy and really make some headway. Stepped out of the car, dropped the fuse box cover out of my hand, stepped on it and snap goes the tabs that hold it in. Now I have a worthless piece of plastic! loll Decided to start with the DS seat belt. Got the top bolt out no problem. Went to take the bottom bolt out. SNAP goes my Torx head socket (for full account of that see "I Hate Torx Head Bolts" thread in the Garage/ Tech section). Alright, lets move on to the visors. No problem. Took the headliner out while I had the visors off so I can re glue the cloth back on. Glovebox door, bingo bango over in a minute. Pulled the dash apart to replace the headlight switch because I thought the tabs were broke on it. Nope, turns out where the screws attach to the dash is busted so I need a new one of those. Finally decided discretion was the better part of valor and stopped. I had done enough damage for one day while "fixing" my truck. But, I still got the glovebox door replaced, visors on, headliner out and learned what I need to fix next.

The saga continues...

BTW, big thank you to dirtydog for hooking me up with the parts and a super sweet bag of screws to replace the ones the douchebag I bought the truck off of never put in!

Well, got started on the fender(s) today I got from ToughBowtieTruck. Nice and clean to start with so I just had to seperate them from the inner fenders and chrome trim. Sanded one down and got it in primer (first coat) . Decided I'll wait until a less windy day to do coat number two. Looks like hell cause it fell off the precarious perch I was painting it on before the primer dried fully. Oh well, I'll clean it up and sand out the marks from the grass before coat number two goes on. Had to do this fender with rattlecan primer since I don' thave my gun yet. Definitely getting my gun as soon as finances permit. Rattlecans suck! Here's the pics.

My 50' is slowly turning into 40' then 30' then 20'! loll Once I get out of work I'm gonna sand it again then go for coat two. I hate rattle cans on a windy day. What you see there on coat one is an entire can!

Well, haven't updated in a while. Still gathering parts but it's slowed down. I'm reminded of what Captain Jack Sparrow said, "Why is the rum always gone?" Only it seems the money is always gone. loll

Anyway, getting ready to deliver a load of hay so I thought I'd throw up a shot of Brutus doing what he does best! 140 bales of first cutting headed for Westphalia in an hour or so.

Well, it's been a couple months so I thought I should update.

ZERO progress made so far. Everyhting pretty much sits where it was back in September. Only difference is now I'm gonna (MAYBE) sell it.

Decided if I was going to get p00 p00 mileage pulling a trailer I was gonna do it with a bigger truck. I'm hoping to find an International 4900, Chevrolet Kodiak 5500, Freightliner FL60 or Ford F600 with a diesel. If anybody knows of someone who wants to trade to a smaller truck lemme know.
