this sums it up:
"What the hell is it?" ???
its a 203 tcase lol
j/k its a cast iron chain driven full time transfer case built by new process in the late '70s. was found under ford, dodge and gm's.
as far as im concerned, boat anchor!
Yup really heavy s.o.b to. Better off as boat anchors. Great for light offroading but are known for breaking a lot under hard play. I had great luck with the 1rst one I had but i was light playing with it, but when I got hard into floor jamming holes or ripping up and down trails the 2nd 203 didnt last long.
they re junk .... i ll go 205 or 208's

x2. i had one in the gold truck, i didnt like it because it was full time. which means no doughnuts, unless you get lockouts, or a part-time kit.
the one in your truck held up to 540 ! really crappy reduction the 208 you had has better reduction

how light was the truck? gears? tires? the weight of moving parts has alot to do with it
208 is the plan this winter im going to run the 203 this season but from wat i have read the 203s wont move the vehicle if frontdriveshaft isnt in??

itll worknin hi loc it has a system of clutches inside.. essentially makes it AWD when not in lock
DONT DRIVE that truck without front drive shaft .with just rear wheel brakes you will roll it ==doh
go with the 205 or 208
the problem with changing tc in that truck is the engine is back 8"down6" really short rear drive shaft not sure slip yoke would work

try finding a ford transfer case standard shift use the internal parts to get rid of slip yoke that is what i've been doing in my cj-7 and i have a really good driveshaft angle almost looks stock i'm running a 4-speed sm465 with a 205 before that i ran sm465 with a 208 both non slip yoke good luck hope it all works out for ya
if you need pics let me know
any one throwin a 203 away let me know i want it i need pieces
I love the 203 tcase!! I have use the same one for 20 years now. from motors with 400hp-600hp.

just run what u have til whenever ... no problem we re all poor man gone mudcrazy....
yea 208 is plan this winter.
going to prolly make custom square drive shafts like mud king
jim i was trying to move her into garage to take engine out to do freeze plug. i remeberd u said that
we will get it in there even if my fordd had to pull it loll
i have a 203 still in my truck, we put a part time kit in it and put lockouts on the front, i will say that the 2 low in addition to the 4 low is nice, but the total gear reduction you get with the 203 SUCKS i have a 208 that i been planning to swap out, but haven't gotten to yet... to make a long story shorter, the axle swap i did (went form 3.08 to 4.10) still gave me less total gearing than if i woulda left my old axles in and just changed teh case... they work and do their job... but that's about all i'll say for teh 203s...
