I have a 1989 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban that I can not get the rear wheels off of. A little over a year ago I had new tires put on it. I had to use a breaker bar and a 5 ft pipe to get the lug nuts off. I have had the front wheels off to do the front brakes. I went to do the rear brakes and rotate the tires and I can not get the rear wheels off. They seem to be stuck on the lugs. They are alcoa aluminum rims and will not budge. I tried a pry bar, 10 lb hammer, and hear without any luck.
I have tried to call the place that put the tires on and just get an answering machine. I left a couple of general messages for them to just call me and one with a little detail on my problem. I do not want to just drive there because it is a 1/2 hour away from me and the truck needs rear brake bad.
Does anyone have any other idea on how to get the rear wheels of? The rear axle is a c-clip corp 14. I am at the point where I might try pounding the wheel studs out...
I had an issue like that and had to climb under the truck and hit the inside of the rim with a sledge to break it loose. The center hole is a tight fit and can corrode and make it even worse.
20 lb. hammer, than anti-seize

LOL I used a ton of anti-seiz on the front after I did the brakes...

I tried hitting the rim, tire, and brake drum. I even tried an air hammer, thinking it might vibrate it loose.
I have heated center of wheel and axel. just a little. and then go under hit the tire with sledge and turn the wheel some. when going together use anti-seize it.

I tried heat...
We even tried the pry bar while hitting the tire with the sledge hammer while it was hot. I worked at it for over 3 hours.
put the front back together n drive it around a short distance with loose lug nuts but keep an eye on them. just an idea u dont have too try it

I thought about taking the truck to get an oil change and get the tires rotated... LOL
Use an any-angle bottle jack to put pressure on the rim, use a block of wood anchored to the opposite wheel or spring . . .
But wait!! If you have a full float axle, you CAN just take the wheel and hub off as an assembly, if you don't have or care to destroy the center caps . . .
take it to discount tire and tellem ur back tires are leaking... they will take them off for you loll or soak it in wd40 and let it sit then go at it the next day with the sledge hammer ;D
and anti seize is a big no no... if you get it between the wheel surface and the hub when you tighten the lugs it is like hydraulic pressure between the two surfaces, doesnt let the wheel tighten all the way up. Also putting it on the studs is not a real good idea, it does the same thing between the surface of the lug nut and the seat on the wheel. (it can actually make the threads strip off the stud easier if you are using a impact).. The best thing you can do is clean both surfaces up as good as you can (we use wire brushes and 3m buffing pads) and just make sure you take the tires off every 3 months/6,000 miles (like for a rotation). That way you can keep the hubs clean and dont have to worry about running into this problem in the future.
While you have the truck in the garage it isnt a bad idea to drop the spare tire check the air in it and WD40 up the winch cable so it doesnt rust up and not come down when you need it.
The Works toilet cleaner. let it soak for a while, add a little more, soak, ect.
It will eat the corrision caused by aluminum against steel.
Used it on semi-trailer rims, came off with small pry-bar
Clr also
I had this problem on my 86, but it was only the right front tire. I used a 4x4 post and sledge hammer, and put the long end of the post up against the rim, and them beat the piss out of it, she finally gave way.
You probably know this already, but dont hammer on the rim itself with the hammer, I try not to do this with the tire itself. Remember, beating a wood block against a rim wont hurt it
I talked to the place that put the tires on and they said they would charge me to get them off. So there was no point in driving there for nothing anyways...
That will be the last time I buy anything from there again. I've baught several lift kits, wheels, tires and other parts from them in the past...
ive used a porta power befor between the wheels and it worked just keep the lugs on so once ones loose you can still get the other
Pull the lugs off shoot some PB blaster on the studs to soak the back side of the wheel, let it sit and either smack it with a sledge hammer or drive it around in circles/ back and forth. just be careful not to take the wheel to the shin when your hitting it with the sledge.
Good Luck..
try jumping it like the dukes of hazzards did??
The lugs aint holdin it, the center is. Soak the center real good, use a wood block and sledge on the back side of the rim or a porta power. You can also use a bottle jack or a high lift jack or whatever ya got (I use a scew jack for just about everything) and wood block if you can find a spot to push from or possibly chain it to the axle housing some how. Get some pressure on it as far out to the outside edge as possible then smack it. It WILL come off. Clean it all up real good once its off and put some GREASE not oil on the center so this dont happen again. ;D
I got!!!! get realy pissed off and do everything every body said!!!

I'm considering this...
I tried using a come along attached to a tree and hiting the wheel with a sledge hammer. I put a jack stand under one side and I pulled the truck off of it once. I'm affraid i'm going to break the c-clips or the axle shafts.
I am going to try again. I am going to do the same thing, but this time I am going to let the air out of the tire so I can hit the rim better. If that doesn't work I am going to pull the axle apart and try to pressing the wheel studs out.
you could do the opposite, max the tire pressure out so the tire is not so bouncy vs the hammer lol if they are load range D you could probably put 65psi in them ==dunno
put the lug nuts half way and go beat the p00 out of it til it falls off ==roll
add some heat.. propane torch type..
heat up around the center n' lugs..

wow I guess I would take the lug nuts half way off and go beat on it
so its locked itself up in the center hub pretty much?
Hell by now i woulda taken out the c clips ++peace
once you get it off clean the center of the rims so there is more clearance there. that way it doesnt happen again.

put the lug nuts on loose and drive it around the yard drive way or whatever and try taking it off again..
I put the lug nuts on loose and went for a 30 min hell ride through the field (it was just all tilled under and half frozen) next to my house. I've been working on my ford and a few other trucks. So the suburban has just been sitting. I'm going to try using a come along attached to a tree again and this time let the air out of the tire to hit the rim. If that doesn't work I am going to pull the axle apart and try to pressing the wheel studs out.
I've tried just about everything suggested here except using a truck to pull on the rim. I've been reading horror stories about the alcoa rims I have. I will be opening the wholes in the rims up when I finally get them off. Then when I get my taxes back I will be buying steel rims and beating the hell out of the alcoa's with the 13# sledge hammer that wouldn't get them off... LOL

I think leaving 10ft of slack in a 30ft tow strap and flooring it is about as hard as I want to hit it. I was pulling the suburban sideway a foot and a half each time I hit it...
hmmm... My 11 year old son just came over to me and said "dad why don't you just put those axles under it" pointing at the corp 14 and dana 60 laying on the floor of my pole barn. They are for my next build but i'm kind of thinking about it...

For a last attempt before u pull the axles, try proppin up a bottle or screw jack behind the rim n get some pressure on it. Next, put your strap on it and chain the truck to a tree or somethin so it wont move and get a hard pull started, then hit it with ur sledge n wood block, also put some heat to it while ur gettin this all set up. Snatchin it with a strap aint gonna do much cuz the strap stretches some - wish u were closer Ive run into this before and always got them loose.

I got an idea, take it to a discount tire, pay $25-35 for a rotation and tell'em ta call when its done. You could also run it around and do some hard stops and get the whole rotor hot then try hammering it off.

if i read it right you are planning to replace the rims in the future.. drill and tap the rim and run a couple bolts in the holes bottoming out on the drum. just a thought.. both holes drilled on one side of the hub.

I did take to Reeds Tire in Holland and they could not get them off either. I have not messed with it since. I started a new job. I also have a ton side jobs and a few other projects of my own to get to first. So I won't even get it in the pole barn until after that stuff is done. I am either going to pull the axle apart of just torch the rims off the studs. I'm thinking about putting tons under the burban (thanks to m sons input) so who knows.
have you tried using a brake drum remover? looks like a giant three jaw puller. The center screw should just force the rim off, If not, it's will mangle the center hub enough to wedge a pry bar under it.

Are they still stuck on there..? ;D
let me touch it, with my bad luck the entire truck will fall apart.
Thanks to two of my friends the rims are off my suburban. It only took 2 trees, 3 ratchet straps, a big sledge hammer, and Rich jumping on the straps to get them off.
And to Truck and Van Specialties you can kiss my azz. The lugs where tightened down so hard that the rims were pressed onto the studs. There was aluminum stuck on the studs after the rims came off.
I had given up trying since I found out I had hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. My budies said they would get the wheels off for me and get my rear brakes fixed.
