Title: dana 60 front or dana 70 front?
Post by: Jthomas on April 01, 2012, 05:52:02 PM
both axles seem common enough to find parts for, and you have alot of gearing options. i can get both axles for the same price, but i dont know which one i would be better off with. i wasnt able to tell by photos how much bigger the d70 is from the 60. cuz i would like to still have front ground clearence, but i know you can have the housing cut down. idk wich way to go on this one. what are your thoughts?

thanks

i just went thru and put a 3/4 ton brake set up on my dana 60.  brackets cost me right around 100 and well  calipers and rotors are half the price of the 1 ton set up.    only issue i ran into was i had to drill the rotors 8 stud holes with an 11/16 bit cuz the shoulder towards the head of my new wheel studs was slightly bigger then the holes in the 3/4 rotor.

ive been doing some shopping and i think its gunna run about $200. but i only have a 15" rim, and im not too sure, but i think with the rotor and caliper, it wont fit.

if you have the proper back spacing on a 15" rim it will work.  i just dont remember forsure what it is.

on 70 front end you need to know witch one it is. the bearclaw front end you will buying all new axle shafts for it. a 60 is better front end.

ill be running 40"-42" tires. nothing too heavy, or much bigger. i just heard that under power the 60s twist up like nothing. but i was just throwing up this post to see what your recomendations were.

Ya go with a 60 front. And you said a set of dana 60's? A 14 bolt ff has bigger axle shafts then a dana 60 rear and are stronger.

a 60 cover will fit a 70 and you can shave the pumkin down bout 1/4" A 8 lug open knuckle 70 shoul have 35 spline outers some of the older 70's have odd knuckles spindles and shafts with large drum brakes. might be hard to swap discs.
