Anyone ever have this happen?
June 26th, 2012, I took all appropriate documents to the secretary of state to register my trailer. Had to have an inspection along with form t54 and bill of sale due to 3900# weight class. Everything was processed that day and I was given the application for title, temporary plate and registrations until the state came out to vin plate the trailer and give me a permanent plate. It is an assembled trailer, which is the reason for the process. They indicated that it would take 14-30 days for the vin stamping and my plate. July 26th the temp. plate expired, so I head to the secretary of state on the 29th to check the process and find out why I hadn't seen the plate yet. It's been more than 30 days, and at this point, its 5 weeks with no plate. On the 29th the lady tells me that I need to re-do the inspections and documents because either the branch or the state capital LOST MY DOCUMENTS!! Keep in mind, I already possess the application for title, registrations and a temporary plate which in itself tells them that they ALREADY PROCESSED THE PROPER FORMS and that I paid a sh!# ton of money due to weight class. At this point, their investigations department is " looking into it" and can take months according to them. Nobody seems to help or have meaningful answers. I may be forced to continue purchasing temporary plates until they get their heads out from you know where. Their mistake is costing me money....gotta love it!

Drives me crazy when stuff like this happens after you go through the proper channels. Do your job people!!
Never heard of a vin plate, my trailer is assembled also?

I'm told that being over 3000# and no previous title or vin # on assembled trailer, that this is protocol. B.s. is what it is.
you think thats bad, they sold me expired tags for my car and truck which causes me to get pulled over by the state police. the trooper looks at my registration which is valid but I have the wrong color tags. no ticket but I have to make another trip to SOS to get it straightened out. SOS employee laughs and thinks its funny. the next year they sell me the same plate for the car and truck and tell me its my fault. the employee then looks at the 2 different registrations and realizes her mistake and I get no apology from her . if this is the best the state can do for employees lets pay them minimum wage even though tat seems a little too much.

X2 Sec of state is run by a bunch of idiots
The rule is 2,501lbs and up it has to have a title no matter what.
There are two separate inspections that have to be done. One by a police officer when you file for your title, and another by the Secretary of State during the VIN application process. At that point, you walk out with the trailer title and plate.
Sounds like they never scheduled for their inspection.

They never scheduled the vin plate to be attached to the trailer because they lost the documents. And, whomever comes out to vin plate the trailer at my house, is to bring the permanent trailer plate too. Sounds like it could still be another 4-6 weeks before they send someone out...they wait for "a group" of people who need this prior to scheduling it. I spent 1:40 there again today. Had to spend another $30 for another temporary plate to use for this weekend. More of my time and money wasted for their mistake.
I'd just stick a assembled trailer plate on it and go ==roll

was in a bind 2 years ago and did that...karma got me. The truck that we were towing with ran out of gas and i got popped with a pretty good ticket and had to properly register the trailer and provide proof to the state police before i could trailer back across the state. Not fun...

They sent me the notification of the date in the mail to meet at the branch office.

You have to take it to a Secretary of State for the VIN attachment. They do all of them in the parking lot. Then you take your documents (the ones that are lost) into the branch office which is open during the inspection so you can get your title and plate.

Exactly. Car or trailer,
you're better off with NO PLATE than the wrong one.
weigh the trailer with one axle on the scale one off, take that weight slip to get your plate. watch the weight when pulling on to the scales get where you want. that is what i have done to get the cheap plate.

and leave it attachad to your truck, it helps transfers some weight (i think).

I'm already too far into it to go that route. It's already been in process 5 weeks.
Talk about taking it up the ==kma
Wow! Damn glad mine weighs under 2000.
What one do you go to? The Livingston County one sucks ass So do all the one in Genesee. I have been going to the West Oakland County one lately on Milford Road just North of M-59.
They are nice and help full unlike all the other ones I have gone to. The finely helped me get all the right paper work so I could have my mm who is 250 miles away get the title set up for my new truck. Not to mention the lady was helping me and two others at the same time.

Yeah, then if DOT wants to scale your trailer to check the plate, you're screwed.

Yeah, that's a setup to fail. Plus I'd assume they may notice you not "weighing it properly."
I do know though, that my trailer had a titled weight of 4,520lb. That's the weight of the trailer on its rear axles. The true full weight is 5,660 lbs, unhooked sitting on the scale.
I had them change the title accordingly.
Changing the title didn't cost me anything though. So if they wouldn't charge for the update I wouldn't say that is too much of a big deal.
Unless maybe the +/- 20lbs (which is standard weighing accuracy, closest 20lbs) throws you into another plate class.
Never did get a call back from them last week. Was told I'd hear something Tuesday afternoon and stopped in Thursday and had to buy a second temporary plate. Should have gotten a call Thursday or Friday from someone to set up the attachment of the vin plate....that didn't happen either. We'll see what this week brings.
As a consolation prize, the clerk hands me a refund form that I can submit to the state to request a refund of the temporary plate fee's due to the issues on their part. Here's the kicker....he then says " good luck, you know how they like giving money back...it's worth a shot, but probably just a waste of your time filling it out." Gee thanks!
i have never heard of any body getting weighted empty, thay want you load so thay can give you a ticket for being over loaded. so just go get weighed for the 2500lbs and down for the $75.00. assembled title.

Oh it happens, trust me! Even weighed a tow truck empty when my old boss got pulled over.
Update: Two temporary plates have now expired at my expense. $30 a pop. It has now been 1 day shy of three months and as I make my forth appearance to again inquire about the plate, they (the branch ) tell me that they need to call the title investigation company because it shows no information being processed. Upon hearing the conversation, I hear her say, " who continues to lose his information?? We've been charging him for temporary plates wrongfully, as he already paid for the permanent plate, how is that fair? " She then tells me that they need to fax all documents to the title investigation services and begin process again. What kind of crap is this?? She tells me that all she can do is charge me again for a temporary plate and I will hear from "Dave" , who is the same individual I NEVER heard from the previous 2 times. I told her that they need to make the call NOW. I've been here since 9:35 this morning...its now 11:05 am. WTF!?

Update 12/20/12:
Still as of last month, had to purchase...yes purchase, my 4th Temporary plate since june, to use my trailer Turkey day at the mounds. $130 in temp. plates for a $108 permanent plate. Yes I feel violated.
The good news!! A state agent came out today and GAVE ME MY TITLE AND VIN NUMBER!!!! 6 Months later, it looks as though I MAY get my plate this week!! The agent was very nice and she also mentioned that this type of thing is normal and had seen a case recently where a dealership was waiting for multiple titles, the state had already cashed the checks but " mysteriously lost" all paperwork and required them to refile and pay fee's. What a frigin racket!!
Wow...
